Phlegm Blocking Lungs (aka Phlegm Obstructing Lungs) is one of the TCM

syndromes that can manifest as asthma.

Phlegm Blocking Lungs is an Excess (problems caused by too much of

something) condition. All Phlegm disorders are classified as Excess

conditions.

Phlegm Blocking Lungs can be Hot Phlegm or Cold Phlegm. The treatment will

vary according rather the Phlegm is Hot or Cold.

Phlegm Blocking the Lungs may be due to Excess - as in the temperature being

too cold or too hot - or it can be due to Deficiency - as in Spleen

Deficiency. One of the jobs of the Spleen is to move fluids in the body and

to make sure that every area of the body has just enough fluids, not too

much or too little. When the Spleen is Deficient (weak), it can't do this

job. Fluids accumulate and Stagnate. They congeal into Phlegm. The Lungs

have a tendency to store Phlegm.

When the Phlegm Blocking the Lungs is due to Spleen Deficiency, the

diagnosis will be Excess (Phlegm Blocking the Lungs) with Deficiency (the

Spleen Qi Deficiency and/or Spleen Yang Deficiency).

Temperatures in the environment that are too hot or too cold is one possible

Excess trigger for Phlegm Blocking the Lungs. Eating too many foods or

taking too many herbs with too much cooling or heating energy can also cause

Excess Heat or Excess Cold which can in turn trigger Hot Phlegm Blocking the

Lungs or Cold Phlegm Blocking the Lungs.
