Guest guest Posted June 2, 2000 Report Share Posted June 2, 2000 The sequence of the 5 Element system is Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood. The condition Fire Not Generating Earth basically has the same symptoms as Spleen Yang Deficiency. The Spleen lacks the Heat to perform its functions of transporting fluids (Internal Dampness accumulates), extracting Qi from food and transporting it to the Lungs, etc. However this is one of those conditions where the associations of the 5 Element system breaks down. It's not Heart Fire that supplies warmth to the Spleen so much as Kidney Fire. The Kidneys are the source of Yang (and Yin) for the entire body. Most cases of Spleen Yang Deficiency will have its base in Kidney Yang Deficiency. Maciocia writes in Foundations, " The relationship between Kidney-Yang and the Spleen is clinically more relevant than that betweem the Fire of the Heart and the Spleen. " (p. 304) Earth (Spleen) Not Generating Metal (Lung) is characterized by Phlegm accumulation in the lungs, cough, and tiredness. The Spleen is Deficient in Qi and/or Yang. As a result the person is tired (Spleen failing to extract Qi from food and take it to the Lungs) and the Spleen is unable to perform its function of moving fluids (which allow them to accumulate and stagnate into Phlegm.) (See Maciocia, Foundations, p. 304 for more details.) Metal Not Generating Water corresponds to Kidneys Not Receiving Qi. (I want to stress here that problems in the Lungs may not be the Root of Kidneys Not Receiving Qi. The problem can be in the Kidneys. Water Not Generating Wood corresponds to Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency. Wood Not Generating Fire corresponds to Deficient Gallbladder. Most authorities state that it's impossible for the Liver to be Deficient. People with Deficient Gallbladder tend to be very timid and lack courage.
