China and other Eastern countries import a lot of American ginseng even

though quite a lot of ginseng is native to that part of the world.

The American ginseng has one very important property that the other ginsengs

do not have. American ginseng has cooling energy instead of warming energy.

If you check the thermal energy of the Qi Tonic herbs in the previous post,

most of them have warming energy, and a few have neutral energy. This

cooling property of American ginseng makes it an ideal herb in cases where

the other properties of ginseng are needed but the person needs cooling.

Ginseng requires shade to grow. It can be grown under artificial shade, but

the best (and most expensive) ginseng is grown in forested areas. China

doesn't have much in the way of forests. This is another reason why that

country imports so much American ginseng.

Ginseng roots grown in forested areas are so expensive that some states like

North Carolina have special laws concerning the stealing of ginseng.

The price of ginseng is why many American herbalists substitute Siberian

ginseng in formulas calling for ginseng.
