Review: The bare basic of tongue diagnosis

Once again it's time for a review of the bare basics of tongue diagnosis.

Looking at the tongue will give you a lot of insights into what is going on with

a person.

 

A pale tongue usually means Yang Deficiency (it also will be moist) or Blood

Deficiency (it also will be dry). Sometimes Qi Deficiency can result in a paler

than normal tongue color. But pale and moist for Yang Deficiency and pale and

dry for Blood Deficiency are the main two to remember.

 

A normal tongue is pale red or pink.

 

A red tongue usually is a sign of Heat. One exception is when the tongue is red

as a result of True Cold, False Heat. But the main thing to remember in the

beginning is that red almost always means Heat.

 

A purple tongue can be a sign of Blood Stasis. If the color is a reddish purple,

that's Blood Stasis with Heat. If the tongue is a bluish purple, that Blood

Stasis with Cold.

 

A blue tongue is severe Internal Cold with Blood Stasis. A blue tongue in a

pregnant woman is a sign that she's in imminent danger of miscarriage.

 

A swollen tongue often is a sign of Dampness. If there are teeth marks in the

sides of the tongue (indentations left by the teeth in the sides of the tongue -

a " scalloped tongue " ) this often narrows it down to Spleen Qi Deficiency.

 

Let's do a little extrapolation here. Suppose someone's tongue is both red and

swollen. What does this point to? The possibility of Damp Heat. Swollen points

to Dampness, and red points to Heat. Damp Heat. (There are herbs specifically

for Damp Heat.)

That's more of a cut or an abrasion and will be confined to one area of the

tongue where the jagged edge is. The scalloped marks left in teeth in cases of

Spleen Qi Deficiency are indentations. Part of the job of the Spleen is to move

fluids in the body and to make sure every area of the body has just the right

amount of fluid, not too much or too little. In cases of Spleen Qi Deficiency,

the tongue is accumulating too much liquid, it's swollen and pressing against

the teeth. An analogy is a person who has fluid accumulation in the body.

Sometimes when they're sitting or lying down, indentations from the chair or the

wrinkled bed clothes will be left in the flesh.

 

The Qi of the Spleen is so weak that the Spleen can't perform its function of

moving fluid in the body and making sure that each area has just enough fluid,

neither too much nor too little.
