One point, one herb

Dear Victoria,

Your post on TCM using one herb (if possible) to treat many different

disorders brings up another question.

There is a website <www.g-jo.com> which emphasizes (and sells materials

for) acupressure. The author writes, of acupuncture:

" Generally, more needles are considered the mark of a novice; fewer

needles are more the mark of a master ... with a single needle, properly

placed, being

the best treatment of all. "

I am curious --- is this actually the case? One needle ???

It's rare for a single herb to clear up ALL problems an individual has, but a

single, well-chosen herb can clear up a lot of problems. For example, ginger

tea made from dried ginger can warm the person Internally, decrease the person's

sensitivity to cold, help stiff muscles (which are due to Cold) and improve

flexibility, increase energy, improve digestion, help with edema (not all cases

of edema), eliminate menstrual pain in women (when the menstrual pain is coming

from Cold), decrease weakness (when it's due to Cold and to the muscles being

stiff because of the Cold), help colonic inertia (when due to lack of Yang

energy and Cold), decrease and resolve Cold Phlegm in the Lungs, stop chronic

bleeding due to Deficiency Cold, and increase libido slightly. Note that the

common denominator in all these problems is Cold and/or Yang Deficiency. (Yang

Deficiency is Deficiency Cold. Cold can be due either to Excess or Deficiency.)

Ginger won't work for say chronic bleeding due to Heat. In fact, it will make

chronic bleeding worse if the underlying Root is Heat because ginger has warming

energy. You'd be adding more Heat to a person and problem that already are too

Hot.

There is some disagreement among authorities on exactly which meridians and

organ systems dried ginger targets. There is agreement on Spleen, Stomach, and

Lung. Other authorities include the Kidney meridian/ system. In any event,

dried ginger is a good herb for treating Internal Cold and increasing Yang

energy. It's indicated in cases of Spleen Yang Deficiency and/or Kidney Yang

Deficiency. (Both Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency can be present at the same

time, or only one may be.)

I prefer the acupuncture people on the list answer the question about the number

of needles used in acupuncture. I'll post separately about herbal formulas in

TCM.
