Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens is raw ginger. The " Recens " is pharmaceutical jargon

for it's raw and undried. In some areas of the country you can pick up raw

ginger in the produce section of your local supermarket. It can be stored frozen

for when raw ginger is needed.

The main use of raw ginger is to Relieve Wind Chill. (More on this later.) Its

thermal energy is Warm (though some authorities say Hot), its taste is spicy,

and it targets the Lung, Stomach, and Spleen meridians.

Dried ginger works mainly on the Interior; raw ginger works more on the

Exterior. Some of the possible symptoms of Exterior Attack by Wind and Cold

include headaches, stiff and sore muscles, and nasal and sinus congestion.

Exterior Wind and Exterior Cold also can manifest as Bi Syndrome (arthritis)

aggravated by Cold and Wind, and raw ginger can be a helpful herb in this case

(though you need more than the ginger in the formula). Raw ginger also can be

used to treat the Tai Yang stage of Cold-Induced Evils, especially the Tai Yang

Exterior Wind stage because it also has the property of harmonizing the Wei

(Protective Qi) and the Ying (Nutritive Qi).

Like dried ginger, raw ginger will resolve Cold Phlegm in the Lungs.

Raw ginger will warm and harmonize the Stomach. Many people are familiar with

ginger's property of relieving nausea and vomiting. It's so good at relieving

nausea that it sometimes gets used in Heat conditions with nausea. When you use

it with Heat conditions iwth nausea you need to mix it with herbs with cooling

energy so the overall energy of the formula is cool or neutral.

Wicke says it has a stimulating effect ohn gastric secretions, including

hydrochloric acid. This is an herb to use if the person too little stomach acid

(which in turn causes the person to not be able to absorb quite a few minerals

and vitamins because of the lack of enough stomach acid). Raw ginger does have

an inhibitory effect on pepsin but increases the activity of lipase.

Wicke also reports that raw ginger has been used in cases of bacillary

dysentery.

Raw ginger is used with Rz Pinelliae and Rz Arisaematis to lessen their

toxicity.

Like dried ginger, raw ginger can raise blood pressure.

Wicke reports that raw ginger is used for acute orchitis if there are no lesions

on the scrotum. A slice of the fresh herb is placed over the scrotum and

changed every day for 3 days. Wicke says that local erythema and numbing

sensations are typical reactions.

Raw ginger is contraindicated in cases of Yin Deficiency and Internal Heat. (The

Internal Heat may be Deficiency Heat (Yin Deficiency) or Excess Heat.
