Rhizoma Zingiberis is dried ginger. Its main function is to warm the Interior.

Its energy is hot, its taste is spicy, and it targets the Spleen, Stomach, Lung,

and (Kidney) meridians. (There is some disagreement among authorities about the

Kidney meridian.)

This is one of the herbs that can be used when the person suffers from Interior

Cold. It doesn't matter the cause of the Interior Cold, but if it is Deficiency

Cold, dried ginger also restores Yang as well as expels Interior Cold. It

frequently gets used in patterns of Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency.

This also is a good one to use in cases of Deficiency Cold of the Spleen and

Stomach. In cases of Cold Phlegm in the Lungs, it warms the Lungs and transforms

Cold Phlegm. (According to Dr. Cheung, Cold Phlegm is best treated by warming

the body.)

Dried ginger also warms the meridians and stops chronic bleeding due to

Deficiency Cold. (Warning: Deficiency Cold is not the only cause of excessive

bleeding. Blood Stagnation and Heat in the Blood also can cause it in which case

treatment would be different.)

Dried ginger is contraindicated in Yin Deficiency with Heat and in Hot Blood.

Wicke says to use dried ginger cautiously in pregnancy but other authorities say

don't use it at all (except maybe in some very special cases).

Wicke points out that dried ginger is a stimulant to the sympathetic nervous

system and does tend to raise blood pressure.

Ginger - fresh or dried - is mixed with pinellia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) in formulas

in order to reduce the toxicity of pinellia. Pinellia is used primarily to

transform Cold Phlegm though it also can be used to treat Hot Phlegm if you

combine it with the appropriate herbs.
