The Ethereal Soul or Hun is housed in the Liver. It's residence is dependent on

sufficient Liver Blood and sufficient Liver Yin.

The Ethereal Soul has to do with the capacity for planning our lives and having

a sense of direction. Maciocia writes, " A lack of direction in life and mental

confustion could be compared to the wandering of the Ethereal Soul alone in

space and time. " (Foundations, p. 81)

As esoteric as this sounds, it has a number of practical applications in

diagnosis and healing. If a person lacks direction in life and is confused,

suspect possible Liver Blood and/or Liver Yin Deficiency. Liver Blood Deficieny

and Liver Yin Deficiency aren't the only possible causes of confusion, but

suspect and rule in or rule out in cases where a person lacks direction and

resoluteness.

The Chinese believe that if Liver Blood and/or Yin are Deficient, the Ethereal

Soul may even leave the body at night because it is not rooted. Again, this

sounds very esoteric and " yooba booga " , but it has some practical aspects in

diagnosis and healing. There are people who experience an unpleasant sensation

of floating right as they fall asleep. This can be a sign that there is a

severe Deficiency of Yin, in particular Liver Yin. Also, there are people who

experience a vague feeling of fear at night before falling asleep. In some

cases they may put off going to bed because of these fears. This may be a sign

that Liver Blood and/or Liver Yin are Deficient and need to be treated.

Anxiety and nervousness can be manifestations of general Yin Deficiency.

Remember in one of the earliest posts on here it was pointed out that even

though fatigue is a symptom of Deficiency, in the case of Yin Deficiency the

nervousness, agitation, and anxiety may mask the fatigue. Nervousness and

agitation are general symptoms of general Yin Deficiency. But, when it's Liver

Yin Deficiency, these feelings of unease and agitation can be especially severe,

especially at night. There may be a reluctance to go to bed because of this

Liver Yin Deficiency and/or Liver Blood Deficiency. Liver Yin Deficiency

(and/or Liver Blood Deficiency) are not the only things that can produce

feelings of unease and disquiet, but these are two things to consider in these

cases.

" Zhang Jie Bin says: 'The Liver stores Blood and Blood is the residence of the

Ethereal Soul. If the Liver is deficient there is fear, if it is in excess

there is anger.' " (Maciocia, Foundations, p. 285) There also can be mixed

patterns of fear and anger, depending on which is the most Deficient or the most

in Excess at the moment. There may be both Liver Blood Deficiency and the Excess

of Fire in the Liver (or Liver Yang Rising) at the same time. In this case you

would see mixed fear and anger in the person.
