Guest guest
The 5 elements in TCM are symbolic of types of energy. You have a pretty good understanding of the symbolism of the Wood element thanks to Dagmar's Letters From China. Next she will be going into Fire in detail. The 5 elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of these elements are associated with a Yang meridian/ organ system and a Yin meridian/ organ system. Members of the same element are called coupled meridians or systems. The two Wood meridians/organs are the Liver and the Gallbladder. The Liver is Yin, and the Gallbladder is Yang. The Earth Yin meridian/organ is the Spleen, and the Earth Yang meridian/ organ is the Stomach. The Metal Yin meridian/ organ is the Lung, and the Metal Yang meridian/ organ is the Large Intestine. The Water Yin meridian/ organ is the Kidney, and the Water Yang meridian/ organ is the Bladder. This is why in my previous post I listed pairs of meridians/organs. The Liver & Gallbladder, the Heart & Small Intestine, etc. The Fire element has 4 meridians/ organs associated with it. These are the Yin Heart & the Yang Small Intestine, and the Yang Triple Warmer and the Yin Pericardium. (Don't worry about not knowing what the Triple Warmer and Pericardium are at this point. There will be future posts on them.) The fact that meridians occur in Yin-Yang pairs has some applications in healing. For example, one method of relieving Excess heat in the Lung is to purge the Large Intestine with laxative/ purging herbs. You shunt some of the Excess in the Yin Metal Lung through the Yang Metal Large Intestine. You also can do this in acupuncture and acupressure. There are special points called Luo-connecting (also spelled Lo) points where the coupled meridians meet. Thus, you can use Spleen 4 (Sp4) to treat problems in both the Yin Earth Spleen and the Yang Earth Stomach. Lung 7 (Lu7) can be used to treat imbalances in both the Yin Metal Lung and the Yang Metal Large Intestine. Don't worry about memorizing all this at this point. The main points are there are coupled meridians/ organ systems, and you can use this in healing by transferring energy from one of the coupled pair to the other.
