Bruising easily

One of the functions of the Spleen system is to keep the blood in the vessels.

Because of this, bruising easily may be a symptom of problems in the Spleen,

particularly a condition called Spleen Unable to Govern Blood.

Spleen Unable to Govern Blood can manifest in a variety of ways including

bruising easily, blood in the stool, bloody nose, chronic subcutaneous bruising,

excessive menses (menorrhagia) or uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia). (Information

from Wicke, volume 1, p. 106) Spleen Unable to Govern Blood may also manifest as

blood spots. These are red spots that can appear in the skin from time to time.

One or all of these may be present in a person who suffers from Spleen Unable to

Govern Blood. Also consider Liver problems in these and other cases of

hemorrhaging. Hemorrhaging also can be caused by Blood Stagnation and by Heat in

the Blood.

Spleen Unable to Govern Blood is a modified version of either Spleen Qi

Deficiency or Spleen Yang Deficiency, and will have much in common with these

two patterns. It is derived from Spllen Qi Deficiency pattern.

You'll tend to see the chronic fatigue, the lethargy, the no desire for physical

activity, the tendency to spontaneous perspiration, the poor appetitie, the

loose bowels, the soft voice with little desire to speak, and the quiet manner

that you tend to see in cases of Spleen Qi Deficiency. The tongue usually will

be pale, the topcoat will be normal to thinner than normal, the pulse will be

weak, evanescent, and fragile. The face will tend to be pale. (Information from

Wicke, vol. 1, p. 106).

The symptoms and the tongue and pulse will help you to differenciate

hemorrhaging due to Blood Stagnation and Heat in the Blood from that due to

Spleen Unable to Govern Blood.

It has been found in the West that people who bruise easily often need vitamin C

and bioflavornoids. Vitamin C alone - especially synthetic vitamin C -

frequently does not correct the problem. The bioflavonoids also are needed. (So

check your bottle of vitamin C to make sure it also contains bioflavonoids.)

People who go on liquid diets or partially liquid diets (like Slim Fast) may

develop this problem. There's evidently something missing from the formulas that

the body needs. Vitamin C and bioflavonoid supplementation alone is not enough

to correct the problem. Going back to a normal diet is.

One thing that being knowledgeable about TCM teaches you is to consider that

symptoms do not appear in isolation. In cases where there's easy bruising, this

probably is just one visible symptom that is coming from the vitamin C,

bioflavonoid, unknown nutrient(s) deficiency. The lack of needed nutrients

possibly may be damaging the Spleen system as well and creating TCM syndromes

like Spleen Unable to Govern Blood or Spleen Qi Deficiency.
