Guest guest
The spring of 1989 was very out of the ordinary in southeast Arizona. It was unusually hot, unusually dry, and unusually windy. Weather forecasters on TV stations in Tucson still make reference to that spring and its unusual weather. During that spring, allergy doctors and nurses reported that they were seeing people who never before in their lives had had allergies in addition to people with known allergies which had gotten unusually bad that spring. Allergy clinics were overwhelmed that spring. Some people either developed asthma or had existing asthma worsen. What was going on that spring? Allegen counts for pollens and molds on most days were not higher than normal in the spring. There have been springs following unusually wet winters that resulted in much higher than normal pollen counts, but allergy clinics weren't overwhelmed those years. Attack by Exterior Wind, Exterior Cold, Exterior Heat, and Exterior Dryness all have the symptoms of sinus congestion and discharge. In addition, Exterior Heat Evil can also have the symptoms of sneezing and red, itchy eyes. Exterior Dryness Evil also can produce dry nasal passages. I've found that a tickle in the throat often is a manifestation of Exterior Wind attacking. Some people are more resistent to Exterior attack than others. Their Protective Qi is strong. Some people are so weather sensitive that they will start to respond to approaching weather changes because the change is apparent. For example, they will start responding to pending Wind (changes in barometric pressure, increase in positive ions) before the actual wind starts. They're like human barometers. When allegy sufferers do better indoors than outside, it often is not only a matter of the allergen count being lower inside than out. It also can be a matter of the weather conditions not being as strong inside. For example, many allergy sufferers have learned to stay indoors with the windows closed and the air ionizer on during days when it's windy. They've been instructed by allergy doctors not only to to buy an air filter (which takes dust, pollens, molds out of the air in the house) but to get an air filter which also ionizes. These ionization units are putting negative ions into the air, thus countering the rise in positive ions that accompanies wind. (Make sure you get an ionizer that uses charcoal in the filter; otherwise, there can be problems from negative ions.) If you have pets, you may notice that some of them show a distinct preference for being near the ionizer on windy days. TCM advice for people sensitive to Wind is to stay low and close to the earth on windy days. Because Wind so readily teams up with other Evils and Wind can attack during all seasons of the year, the Chinese see Wind as the foremost cause of sickness. There are three circumstances in which people are most vulnerable to Wind: While they're perspiring, when they've just gotten up from bed, and right after taking a bath. So you definitely want to stay out of the wind at those times. The organ most vulnerable to attack by Wind is the Liver, though other organ systems also can be hurt by Wind. The season of the year in which Wind is the predominate atmospheric energy is spring, though wind can occur during other seasons as well.
