A meridian is more than the organ it's named for

Remember in a previous post when I said that Western medicine is oriented

towards the physical organ whereas TCM is oriented toward functions? The Western

doctor thinks location, color, shape, size when you say organ; the TCM healer

thinks function.

In TCM a meridian and organ system is more than just the organ the meridian is

named for. For example, when you say kidneys, a Western doctor thinks only of

two organs. When you say Kidney to a TCM healer, the healer thinks of all the

functions and parts of the body that are associated with the Kidney system.

These include in addition to the actual kidneys, the adrenal glands, the bones,

the teeth, and the ears. When you tell a TCM healer that you are having problems

with your ears and/or hearing, the TCM healer automatically will suspect a

problem in the Kidney meridian. If you ever answer a TCM-style questionnaire,

under the Kidney section will be questions about your ears and hearing. There

also will be questions under the Kidney section about your bones, your teeth,

your back, your knees, and your libido (sex drive). All of these things are

influenced by the health of the Kidney.

Likewise, the Liver section will include questions about your eyes and sight.

(Reread Dagmar's newsletters for more information on the Liver and

associations.)

The Lung section will include questions about your nose and skin. The Spleen

meridian also includes the functions of the pancreas. In some books you will see

the Spleen meridian referred to as the Spleen-Pancreas meridian.

Don't worry about memorizing what is associated with what at this stage. You'll

start to pick that up naturally as you read more about TCM. At this point what

you should know is that meridians include more than just the functions of the

organs they are named after.
