Tammatha,

Here is something interesting...

You have to watch out for the source of the kelp. There are only certain areas of the world where the ocean the kelp is harvested from isn't polluted. You could end up with arsenic, mercury and other heavy metals and pollutants in your kelp if it's is coming from a bad source. You'll also want to avoid getting too much Iodine. I think there's an area along the coast of Japan that's be designated as clean enough for kelp growing. This is so much of a problem that there are international laws on the amount of certain pollutants contained in kelp, so do your research, in this case, the brand you're buying really is important.Pollution-free kelp is healthy, it has a lot of minerals in it, good stuff.

Still checking....

I have been using Icelandic Kelp from www.natureslife.com and I have just sent them an email to see if there would be any traces of arsenic in this product. I read a little about the product and the kelp is from Iceland, here is a little info.....I take one w/out calcium though.

It may be just about impossible to find. However I've read several articles like this one

http://www.ryandrum.com/seaxpan1.html which reassure me about eating sea vegetables.

"Active Removal Of Radioactive and Heavy Metal Toxic Cations: The phycocolloids, Algin in all brown algae, and Carageenan and Agar in many red algae, aggressively trap metallic ions. The isolated colloids and/or the seaweeds containing them can be used to remove heavy metals from our food and bodies and carry those metals out in the stool. Although many seaweeds contain some radioactive elements, careful research indicates that these elements are usually not released into our food or bodies."

The brand I use is Pacific Harvest. I have sent them an email requesting info about heavy metals, so I'll let you know what their answer is re any testing done.
