Guest guest
I have just made my first batch of " soup " . Picked the oleander from a nice healthy looking plant, however, as it is mid winter here (Down Under) it was not in the vigorously growing stage but had seed pods which I did not use. Cut about 8 inches down from the tips. I cut it into about 3in pieces and put into an 8 litre (approx. 8 quarts) stainless steel pot. Boiled it, using reverse osmosis water, for roughly 4 hours (it stank the house out). I then removed the oleander and continued to boil for about another 4 hours until it was reduced to about 2 quarts. I left it to cool overnight. I was not able to find any unbleached paper towels anywhere so I filtered it using 10 unbleached coffee filters. There was very little residue in the pot; the liquid did not thicken at all, the resulting colour was that of a good mid strength beer!! I have now diluted it with 80 proof vodka - 50/50. My questions are: Does this sound OK? How long will this stuff keep? Could I have used the seed pods? Has anyone ever made it in a pressure cooker and if so, how long would you cook it for? Should I have cut it smaller? I have made this for a friend with cancer but am going to try it myself first. Is there anything else I need to know, I am a little nervous? Sorry this is so long and thanks for all your wonderful work. Mary
