Did You Know…the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone? Of course, you do. But acknowledging that connection will make you realize how the widely used acid blockers (for GERD/esophageal reflux/heartburn/acid reflux/acid indigestion...all synonyms) will rob your bones AND brain of the nutrition it needs. Oh, those TV ads do make the little purple pill sound so harmless!

The issue is not too much acid...it’s too little! Surprised? Simply put, when there is too little stomach acid, foods don’t break down properly, stomach contents push against the esophageal sphincter, weakening it, allowing backup. If the stomach acid was as strong as it should be, the sphincter would stay strong.

What commonly upsets the acid/alkaline balance? Sugar, stress, overeating, and aging (causing decreased enzyme action in the gut – we are born with a bank of digestive enzymes and, depending upon our eating habits, can start running low on them as we age).

Nature provided us with the ability to concentrate acid in our stomachs for a reason: to help break down our foods, nutrients, maintain an acid barrier to infectious diseases of the intestines, and maintain acid/alkaline balance in the gut to support the growth of good bacteria, discouraging growth of the bad guys. Continuously blocking the stomach acids has been proven to cause increased problems with bones (even in men, who are normally less susceptible to such issues) due to decreased mineral absorption (stomach acids help to absorb minerals) increased risk of dementia, and other health issues.

Over 1500 people 65 years of age and older, with no observable signs of dementia, were tracked for 5 years. During that time 17% developed early signs of cognitive impairment. But those who took acid blockers had significantly greater risk of cognitive impairment than those who did not.

What are natural alternatives to acid blockers?

Substantially reduce sugar intake (including white flour products) Take digestive enzymes with meals DGL (a licorice root product found in health food stores) before meals Consult with a holistic practitioner to have your hydrochloric acid levels checked...too little stomach acid can be naturally augmented for better absorption of minerals and breakdown of foods Uninvited pathogens may be causing your issues (I work with these using natural remedies) I also work with Chloro-Combo...a wonderful product (aloe/chlorophyll/digestive herbs) that neutralizes stomach acids Eat smaller meals more frequently so the volume of food is not exacerbating your symptoms Raising the head of your bed may help nighttime reflux. Alkalize your meals. Instead of thinking what meat/fish/chicken (all acidic foods) I am going to have, think instead: what greens am I having and add some protein to them. Create a plate that is 75% greens (alkaline foods) and 25% protein. This is a very healthy, life supporting way of eating on a regular basis.

The focus of my work has always been taking charge of your health naturally. This is the perfect example of how allowing a pharmaceutical drug to take charge will challenge your health in the long run necessitating a laundry list of pharmaceuticals (ie bone-building drugs, anti-dementia drugs, antibiotics) to correct the original insult the acid blocking drug made to the body.

Please think about who you know that would benefit from this valuable information and share it with them. It's a blessing to be able to help one another.

Until next time…stay healthy, think peace, be love and see love in everyone!
