Guest guest
My fondest memories were being crammed, CRAMMED into my nonna's tiny kitchen to gab and eat, sometimes simultaneously. My Irish mother used to say my bisnonna could make grass taste good! Janet

Guest guest
Mary, One time I had a book report to do when I was in the 5th grade. I asked my mother for ideas. Since it was close to Thanksgiving she said why don't you tell them how we celebrate the holiday with the family. I thought it was a great idea. My grandmother made this amazing chicken soup with tiny meatballs made from chicken breast, egg, parsely- from the garden, grated cheese and she'd spend hours making these tiny gems of flavor and floating them in the soup 15 minutes before it was served. Then she blanched escarole in boiling water to take out the bitterness and added it to the soup. Sheer HEAVEN! Well that was the first course. Salad followed along with manicotti, Turkey, various meats, starches, homemade breads, etc. I stood in front of the room and read my report and didn't go into detail like I just did, I just mentioned each course, including desert which included homemade sponge cake with vanilla cream filling and whip cream on top, various pies, cannolis and fried Italian bow knots with confectioners sugar and other traditional delights...NOBODY believed it! I was stunned. I thought most people shared this type of food...at least the Italians! What I learned was they just did the traditional American turkey thing and I felt they were jealous because they never had such a feast...what an eye-opener! Even our vinegar was made from our own wine. Ahh, those were the days and it was my gain cuz every word uttered was true. Mmm good!
