Chickweed Is a Star

(Stellaria media)

by Susun Weed

Snowdrops and crocus flowers herald the

spring. And if you look in between them, with luck, you'll see a bright

green creeping plant low to the ground with little white starry flowers:

chickweed, a good friend of mine. I say she's a star, because her

botanical name -- Stellaria media -- means little stars. And

because she really stars at helping us when we need to gently dissolve

something or to cool off inflamed tissues. Chickweed not only effects

physical health, she is a psychic healer too. She opens us up to cosmic

energies and gives us the inner strength we need to handle those energies.

Mother and Child

The

Cervix

by Susun Weed

I am the gateway; I am the door. I connect the

inside to the outside. I decide which outside comes in. I control the flux

and the flow. I hold the wise blood, or let it go. I protect the growing

babe, or thrust it unformed into a world unsuitable. None leave, none

enter, except by my grace, my decision. I am the passage of birth. I am the

mark of the sun. I am as near as the reach of your finger, yet mysterious

and hidden. Many women, most men, born through me, go their whole life

without gazing upon me. I offer blood to Mother Earth. I spin stretchy

strings of fertile mucus to Grandmother Moon.

Empower Yourself

Seven Directions Movement

Meditation

by White Feather

It was a warm summer evening on the

Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in western New York when Grandmother Twylah,

(we called her " Twy " back then around 1985) asked me to join her

for a talk she would be giving at a place called Lilly Dale. I was happy to

be her driver as I would often do at that time. She invited me to sit up

front and before I knew it she was introducing me to the audience and

explaining to them I was going to teach them the Seven Directions Movement

Meditation.

Wisdom Keeper

Dancing on the Web

by JoAnne Dodgson

As the sunset painted the clouds

purple and red, a spider crawled out from the shadows and began to weave a

web. I stepped toward her to get a closer look, curious yet cautiously

keeping my distance. The spider's close proximity evoked old habitual

fears, those lingering effects of the rampant propaganda about the

dangerous, repulsive, predatory nature of all things creepy-crawly. The

spider looked otherwordly with her sleek elliptical brown body encircled by

eight highly arched legs vividly marked with gold and cream stripes. She

was a skilled acrobat, moving about with great agility, free-falling from

the porch rafters on invisible fibers, swiftly dancing around on her many

legs. Intrigued, I spent much of the evening watching her.

Wise Woman Wisdom

Poke

(Phytolacca americana)

by Susun

S. Weed

I am astride a horse, riding through Provence,

singing to the scotch broom, inhaling lavender, rosemary and thyme,

drinking teas of elder blossom or linden flowers, swigging St. Joan's wort

tincture, rubbing myself with Joan's wort oil, spraying myself with yarrow

tincture, and hoarding my osha root in case there's an emergency. What else

is in my herbal first-aid kit? With the abundance of herbs around me, what

else did I bring to France? What herbs do I carry with me whenever I leave

home? Of the herbs in my herbal first-aid kit, osha is the rarest one I

use. (See

last issue.) But poke is the

most dangerous, and comfrey the most controversial. Poke plants (Phytolacca

americana) are large, showy perennials. Living as they do year after

year, they accumulate a huge, spindle-shaped, root.

Anti-Cancer Lifestyle

Dandelion – Teeth of the Lion

by Anita Sanchez

Massachusetts, About 1621

A woman kneels in the rich, dark soil of a

garden. Golden sunlight pours down on the freshly-turned earth, and the

comforting warmth helps her to forget the cold. After a winter filled with

hardship, death, and sorrow, it had seemed as if the sun would never shine

again. But now the grass is greening, and spring has come at last. She crumbles the soil

between her fingers, preparing it carefully for the seeds. It is vitally

important that these seeds grow: she is planting an herb garden, of plants

carefully chosen for their healing powers.

Goddess Speaks

Nurturing Ourselves

by Anna Jarrett

It’s one of those very wet, very cold, dark

autumn nights. We wait, in the sea cave, perched just above the rising

tide, for the full moon to rise over the sea, and bring us her light. The small fire we’ve lit

provides a little warmth and a lot of smoke, a cleansing smoke which

welcomes us into the Moon Lodge Space. Ahh! Such a sacred space. I sit

quietly smiling in the cave, enjoying the cool, hard surface of the sea

cave floor, an earthy reminder of our ancient past when we gathered around

fires every night, to talk, to eat and to rest under the night sky. The

moon slips out from behind the dense grey clouds and her white glow

sparkles on the sea ripples below us. Mmmm, I’m in heaven. I love my

monthly Moon Lodges.

Interstitial Cystitis

by Susun Weed

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammation of the space between

lining of the urinary bladder and its muscle. Please allow me to offer you

some ways to deal with your interstitial cystitis. I agree that antibiotics

are not the best choice. Women with cystitis have bacteria in their urine;

antibacterial drugs or herbs (such as uva ursi, yarrow, cranberry, or

echinacea) usually restore health quickly. Women with IC, however, have no

bacteria in their urine, so antibacterial agents fail to relieve the

distress.
