Dear Diana,

Here is your latest health tip on the topic of...

Feel Good about Yourself

by Renee Cart

Here are some suggestions that can help you develop

good feelings about your body and ultimately, about

yourself:

Start by determining a realistic weight goal for

yourself. Base it on your genetic background, bone

structure, age, how much time you commit to exercise,

cooking, etc. Base your weight goal on a healthy ideal

versus the beauty ideals within the culture. It's

better in the long run to set a higher weight goal that

is attainable than a lower one that is unrealistic.

Remember, nothing is more motivating than success.

Teach others how to talk about and treat your body.

Remember your brain is like a computer. You can't

control what others have said in the past about your

body, but you can control what others say now. When

someone comments in a critical way about your

appearance, instead of being embarrassed and trying to

explain yourself, switch the burden of explanation to

the person making the comment. This decreases the

number of critical comments others will say to you. You

can also use this as an opportunity to teach others how

to support you in the future. Say to them, " If you are

concerned about my weight, don't comment about it, walk

with me three times a week or watch the kids while I

do. "

Engage in body positive behaviours each day. At the end

of each day, write a few notes or a journal about the

activities you've engaged in to feel good about your

body. When people prepare for a fitness event, eat

well, exercise, engage in relaxation behaviours, they

tend to feel good about their bodies. Before you go to

bed each night, think of your schedule for the next

day. Think of positive body behaviours in which you can

engage. Visualise yourself doing these behaviours the

next day.A little bit of change each day is what leads

to real change. Take care of your body, each day, and

every day, and the rest will follow.
