I’ve heard enough prognostication about the economy to last me a lifetime! Yes, gas is expensive. Yes, the mortgage industry is crumbling, yes prices for food and everything else is going up, people are losing jobs. It’s a scary world out there. But honestly, it’s scarier in our own homes. It is our home economies that need to be shaken up, regardless. The Restaurant Association reports that on average, 1 in 5 meals is eaten out! That’s a lot of money going to the restaurant’s economy and a lot of money being pulled out of your pocket. Let’s face it; there are LOTS of ways to save money. You can line dry your clothes and save a few bucks on your electric or gas bill. You can take the bus and save on your commute. But to really impact your family’s home economy, you can stop eating out (this means lunch, too—it’s called a Brown Bag, ladies and gentlemen) and start cooking at home. If you need help, check out my website for a free menu—this menu includes a day menu with breakfast, lunch and snacks and a categorized grocery list, too! Eating at home, wisely shopping from a list and eating what is in your house will save you a LOT of money! Here’s an inexpensive recipe that is nutrient-rich and delicious. To make it even less expensive, make your own black beans. Enjoy! Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili Serves 4-6 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 1/2 cups chopped onions 3 garlic cloves, pressed 2 1/2 cups 1/2-inch pieces peeled sweet potatoes 2 tablespoons chili powder 2 teaspoons ground cumin salt and pepper to taste 3 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed, drained 2 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable broth 1 14 1/2-ounce can diced tomatoes in juice 3 cups (packed) coarsely chopped kale In a large soup pot, add the olive oil and heat over a medium high heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until onions are translucent. Add in the sweet potatoes and spices, stir and add the rest of the ingredients. Cover, bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes or until sweet potatoes and kale are fork tender. Ladle it up and enjoy! ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* OUR SPONSOR Get Organized Today ~ With EasyFile Home Filing System! EasyFile makes it quick & easy to organize your important papers. Even if you diet and exercise regularly there are always some things about your body you are not happy about and want to hide. Did you know that dressing smarter can help camouflage those minor imperfections? Instead of saying, “Does this make me look fat?” wouldn’t you prefer to say, “I look 10 pounds slimmer!” Here are some clever ways to help you appear like you have lost a whole 10 pounds-- Base your wardrobe on dark neutrals. The darker tones have a natural slimming effect. Dark colors minimize and recede into the background. Also, they are less likely to show a small smudge and won’t need frequent cleaning. Choosing dark neutral colors like chocolate brown, black or charcoal gray are your best bet. Even prints with dark backgrounds are good. Fit is it! Only wear clothes that fit you well. If you wear clothes that are too baggy, contrary to what you may think--they make you look heavier! The same goes with tight clothes. When clothes fit you too snug, they show every bulge and create ugly horizontal lines! The key is “body skimming” no matter what size you wear! Alterations. For some reason, women think they need alterations only for their wedding day! This is so not true! The right fit makes you look slimmer, so don’t be afraid to go and take your clothes in and have them altered. A nip or tuck here or there can make all the difference in the world and will make you look like a million bucks. Tighten up! Tighten up your bra straps a bit. By doing so, you’re giving the girls an instant lift. Also remember to stand with good posture. Mother was right, stand up straight and suck in your tummy! The heels have it! Wearing heels make your legs look longer. It may sound simple but 2” to 3” can make you look long, lean and sexy! All in one. Dress in one color tone from head to toe. This monochromatic trick is famous with fashion stylists. Instead of wearing a different color on top and then having a break in color, there is one long, lean line that is very slimming. When wearing one color from head to toe, add some interest with texture in the fabric. An example would be a nubby sweater matched up with some smooth gabardine slacks. Also add interest with some fun, funky accessories like coordinating earrings and draw the eye up with a splash of color near your face! Use these style tips and start dressing slimmer today! Maybe a comment? Or tell me what you’re doing to be healthier in 2008. Send it in with your name and state (or country) and we'll use it in a future Healthy-Foods issue! **Keep costs down by buying from farmer’s markets. My farmer's market has cheap, FRESH asparagus -- the canned stuff is for bottom-feeders. I steam it & dip it in balsamic vinegar. If I'm feeling ambitious, I mince some fresh garlic or shallots and put in the balsamic vinegar. ~Alice in PA ED. NOTE: Great grilled too! I use a little olive oil and grill. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* Would you like to place an ad in this newsletter?
