Guest guest
Lunar Phases March 7 - 11:14 am* March 14 - 5:46 am* March 21 - 1:40 pm* March 29 - 4:47 pm* The March Night Sky - March 2008 The night sky reflects the change from winter to spring. The most prominent constellations of winter, such as Orion, Gemini, and Canis Major, remain in good view, but they are in the western half of the sky during the evening hours and slide from view by midnight or shortly thereafter. At the same time, such spring stalwarts as Leo and, a bit later, Virgo, are climbing skyward in the east. Their precise annual march across the sky is like the hands of a celestial clock, ticking off the hours of another year. 2-3 Jupiter and the Moon team up low in the southeast at first light. Brilliant Jupiter is just to the upper left of the Moon on the 2nd, and about the same distance above it or to its upper right on the 3rd. 9 Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States. 14 The Moon barely misses bright orange Mars tonight. 18 The Moon appears to miss the star Regulus, the “heart” of Leo, the lion, by no more than 1 or 2 degrees. Saturn stands below them. 19 Saturn and Regulus line up to the upper left of the Moon. Brighter Saturn looks golden. Regulus is slightly farther from the Moon. 20 The vernal equinox occurs at 12:48 a.m. CDT, marking the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. 26 The Moon and Antares, the brightest star of Scorpius, huddle together after midnight tonight. At their closest, they will be separated by about one degree, which is less than the width of a finger at arm’s length. 31 Jupiter, which looks like a brilliant cream-colored star, stands to the left of the Moon at first light.
