Essential

Oil Properties and Characteristics

Sage essential oil is pale-yellow mobile

liquid with a fresh, strong, warm-herbaceous and camphoraceous odour.

Origin and

History

Sage is a small green, evergreen shrubby

perennial with woody stems near the base and herbaceous ones above. It grows

up to 0.8m high and is a native of the Mediterranean region. It is cultivated

worldwide.

The generic name Salvia is derived from

the Latin salvare, meaning 'to save', which refers to its medicinal

properties. 16th Century herbalist Gerard tells us that sage

" is singularly

good for the head and brain, it quickenethe the senses and memory,

strengthenethe the sinews, restoreth health to those who have palsy,

and taketh away shaky trembling of the members "

According to Culpepper, sage was reputed

to provoke urine, bring down women's courses, stops the bleeding of wounds

and cleanses foul ulcers and sores.

Nowadays, sage is used as a tonic,

digestive, astringent and antispasmodic. It is used as a tea or infusion, it

is used to reduce perspiration, to stop the flow of milk, to treat nervous

conditions, dysmenorrhea, diarrhoea, gastritis and sore throat. Sage is

commonly used as a flavour ingredient in food products.

Method of

Extraction

Sage oil is distilled from the dried

leaves of S. officinalis.

Precautions

During Use (Contraindications)

Sage oil should

not be used during pregnancy, for young children or anyone suffering from

epilepsy.

In spite of the

therapeutic value of sage oil, it is recommended that sage officinalis

essential oil is only used by professional Aromatherapists. Sage essential

oil contains a high percentage of thujone and camphor which have been

identified as provoking epileptic seizures.
