Backache First Aid Tips

the Wise Woman Way

by Susun Weed

Heat—a warm bath, a hot shower, a hydroculator, a hot water bottle, a towel

dipped in boiling water—will provide temporary relief for most backaches.

Tiger Balm, Olbas, Zheng Gu Shui, Wintergreen oil and other homemade or

purchased herbal liniments and rubs can penetrate into deep muscle tissue

to relieve tension and pain. They work best if followed by moist heat.

St. John's/Joan's Wort Hypericum perforatum is highly effective at

relieving backaches. The tincture is a specific for muscle spasms; use

15-20 drops in a glass of water every few hours as needed. For severe pain,

add 3-5 drops of Skullcap tincture. The infused oil of St. J's has the

unique ability to enter the nerve endings, relieving pain and easing any

nervous system irritation. It works like a chiropractic adjustment, but

through a different route: the nerve endings are soothed and the muscle is

released, the vertebrae slide back into place.

Headache Cures

excerpt from Travelers Joy

by Juliette de Bairacli Levy

For a headache, make a strong brew of wild or garden mint (not peppermint).

Take strong drinks of this frequently. Apply the mint cold on cotton cloths

to the entire forehead, and bandage lightly in place. Or pound up a handful

of lavender sprigs, wild or garden, and infuse them into vinegar for

several hours.

Then apply this lavender vinegar to the forehead, using cotton cloths in

the same way as the mint brew. Apply also to the wrists and to the nose. A

few drops can be taken internally on a lump of sugar, three times daily.

Mint vinegar can be made if lavender is not available.

Stories of my Ancestors

First Snow

by Waynonaha TwoWorlds

Dark heavy gray clouds swirl over head as I walk down the sea grass lined

path to the beach. The wind billows my coat around my body seeming to reach

icy fingers into my sweater beneath. I pull the hood of my jacket closer to

my face and try to block out the ever increasing wind.

Only moments earlier I was sitting beside a good warm fire looking out at

this same dark sky and wondering if the snow will come today. It threatens,

and the news promises, but still not a sign of the first snow. I seem to

feel a need to move and do something; the restless need to explore takes

hold of me. I leave all reason behind and, dressing warm, I leave the

house. The warmth of that fire seems far now away as I enter the sandy

path. I push my cold hands deeper into my pockets to protect them from the

now freezing wind.

The Malvaceae (mallow) family

by Susun Weed

I like to stay at home and watch my flowers bloom. And I also like to

travel and see other flowers. In previous columns you've accompanied me

horseback riding in the lavender fields of Provence; now I invite you to

come with me to Costa Rica, where hummingbirds sip nectar in cloud forests

and toucans tilt their beaks in a raucous serenade.

One of the first plants to greet me when I arrived in Costa Rica was a

friendly face I knew at once: a bush of beautiful molten-red hibiscus

flowers. You could say that hibiscus flowers are the emblem of the tropics.

I've seen their blazing colors and protruding " tongues "

throughout Hawaii, across Jamaica, lining the roads in Puerto Rico, and in

the gardens of tropical paradises closer to home as well. But I wasn't

thinking of any of those places as I smiled back at that grinning hibiscus

in Costa Rica, then picked and ate several of its crisp, nectar-filled blossoms.

Pura vida!

Therapeutic Massage

and Diabetes 1.1

by Mary Kathleen Rose

I had recently graduated from massage school in 1985, and was in the

process of moving. Many factors in my life were in flux at the time, so I

paid little attention to the physical symptoms that presented themselves

over a period of several weeks. As these symptoms persisted--fatigue,

excessive thirst and frequent urination--I knew I needed medical help.

Matters worsened as I became weaker, developing abdominal pain, nausea and

shortness of breath. By the time I was taken to the hospital, I was barely

conscious, having developed a life-threatening condition known as diabetic

ketoacidosis. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Heart Mother Crone

by Roslyne Sophia Breillat

She, woman, represents the heart of the earth, the hearth of the home, the

fire of the heart. Her transitional cycles spiral and flow in unison with

the rhythm of stars, tides, oceans, seasons. She, peacekeeper, mother, lover

is the jewel of the lotus, the vastness of the void that gives birth to

all. When in union with the power, consciousness and beauty of the earth,

she knows who she truly is.

As she passes through the initiatory phases of her life her heart

potentially opens to embrace new ways of living, deeper ways of loving,

gentler ways of being. Through menstruation, pregnancy, birthing, mothering

she embraces her capacity for becoming more female, more real, more true to

her inner rhythms and her innate intuitive knowing.

Grandmother

Gaia

Homing Instincts

by JoAnne Dodgson

A wild ancient stirring rippled through the flock of blue herons standing

at the river's edge. Compelled into flight by an irresistible calling, the

restless flock of birds rose into the air on their broad elegant wings,

beginning their migration south. They flew for many days and many moons and

many miles, following an instinctual knowing imprinted deep within. As they

crossed the great waters, a storm blew into their path.

Gusty winds raced in from the north. Lightning flickered and flashed.

Thunder rumbled and rolled across the sky. Pelting rains and swirling

whirlwinds pulled one of the herons off course. Struggling against the

storm's unbridled forces, the blue heron finally gave up, exhausted, and

plummeted toward the ground.

Learning Herbs Interview 1.7

Susun Weed & John Gallagher

Susun: Let me tell you a wonderful story that a woman shared with me. And I

asked her if I could share it and she said, " Well that's why I wrote

it out for you, because I really wanted you to share it. " It's just

such an interesting story.

At the age of 57 this woman had a bone scan at her doctor's office, and her

doctor was incredibly alarmed and said, " Oh my goodness! You have

osteoporosis. You have to start taking drugs immediately. We really have to

deal with this. " And she said, " No. I don't want to take any

drugs. And I feel just fine and I'm not going to do anything about my osteoporosis. "
