Guest guest
Black Cohosh Continues to Help Symptoms of Menopause By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, August 28, 2007, abstracted from lack cohosh with or without St. John's wort for symptom-specific climacteric treatment - Results of a large-scale, controlled, observational study " in the August 2007 issue of Maturitas Known for more than 30 years to be effective in helping alleviate menopausal <http://www.herbalremedies.com/menopause-information.html> complaints,(1) black cohosh <http://www.herbalremedies.com/blackcohosh.html> (Cimicifuga racemosa) is able to exert these effects by acting like estrogen on mammary tissue.(2) These properties of black cohosh also help it with overall cell health.(3) A 2006 study(4) showed black cohosh and St. John's Wort <http://www.herbalremedies.com/stjohnswort.html> to " alleviate [menopause onset] complaints, including the related psychological component " . Now a new study(5)has again found black cohosh to be a very effective herb for helping with the onset of menopause. In the study, over 6,000 women nearing menopause were given a supplement containing 2.5 mg black cohosh, black cohosh plus 245-350 mg St. John's Wort, or placebo twice daily for six months. The women were evaluated before the study began as well as at months three and six by completing a 10-item questionnaire called the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS).(6) Their responses rated symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating, cardiac complaints, sleep disorders; depressive mood <http://www.herbalremedies.com/depression.html> , nervousness <http://www.herbalremedies.com/nervoussystem.html> , nervous irritability and joint and muscle symptoms. The researchers found that for all variables, the treatment effects were already evident at month three and increased even further until Month six. Specifically, overall MRS scores in the black cohosh group decreased by nearly 43%, with 59% and 77% of patients taking only black cohosh improving " much or very much " by 3 and 6 months, respectively. For those taking both black cohosh and St. John's Wort, 64% and 90% of patients improved " much or very much " by 3 and 6 months, respectively. For the researchers, these results " support the effectiveness and tolerability…using black cohosh…or a combination of black cohosh and St. John's wort in patients with…psychological symptoms such as nervousness/irritability and depressive mood swings.
