There are some previous posts in the archives on the tastes of foods and

herbs, and how taste relates to the properties of food and herbs.

 

In TCM, diet is considered the first line of defense in good health. The

Chinese pay a lot more attention to the healing properties of food than

people in the West do. In the West the accent is on avoidance of certain

foods. Like salt if you have high blood pressure, sugar and refined

carbohydrates if you have diabetes, fats if you have heart trouble, etc. In

TCM the accent is more on what to take for specific problems. For example,

tomatoes supply Yin energy to the Liver, so a person who has Liver Yin

Deficiency would want to include a lot of tomatoes in the diet.

 

There are some food prohibitions in TCM like milk and milk products if the

person suffers from Phlegm because milk products from cows do increase

mucous.

HEADACHE? EAT FISH!

Eat plenty of fish -- fish oil helps prevent headaches.

So does ginger, which reduces inflammation and pain.

 

HAY FEVER?! EAT YOGURT!

Eat lots of yogurt before pollen season.

Also-eat honey from your area (local region) daily.

 

TO PREVENT STROKE DRINK TEA!

Prevent buildup of fatty deposits on artery walls with regular doses of tea.

(Green tea is great for immune system)!

 

INSOMNIA (CAN'T SLEEP! ?) HONEY!

Use honey as a tranquilizer and sedative.

 

ASTHMA? EAT ONIONS!!!!

Eating onions helps ease constriction of bronchial tubes. (Years ago, people

would place onion packs on the chest, helped respiratory ailments & made

breathing better).

 

ARTHRITIS? EAT FISH, TOO!!

Salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines actually prevent arthritis. (fish has

omega oils)

 

UPSET STOMACH? BANANAS - GINGER!!!!!

Bananas will settle an upset stomach.

Ginger will cure morning sickness and nausea.

 

BLADDER INFECTION? DRINK CRANBERRY JUICE!!!!

High-acid cranberry juice controls harmful bacteria.

 

BONE PROBLEMS? EAT PINEAPPLE!!!

Bone fractures and osteoporosis can be prevented by the manganese in

pineapple.

 

MEMORY PROBLEMS? EAT OYSTERS!

Oysters help improve your mental functioning by supplying much-needed zinc.

 

COLDS? EAT GARLIC!

Clear up that stuffy head with garlic. (garlic lowers cholesterol.)

 

COUGHING? USE RED PEPPERS!!

A substance similar to that found in the cough syrups is found in hot red

pepper. Use red cayenne pepper with caution - only Texans can eat more than

the Mexicans.

 

BREAST CANCER? EAT Wheat, bran an! d cabbag e

Helps to maintain estrogen at healthy levels.

 

LUNG CANCER? EAT DARK GREEN AND ORANGE AND VEGETABLES

A good antidote is beta carotene, a form of Vitamin A found in dark green

and orange vegetables.

 

ULCERS? EAT CABBAGE

Cabbage contains chemicals that help h eal both gastric and duodenal ulcers.

 

 

DIARRHEA? EAT APPLES!

Grate an apple with its skin, let it turn brown and eat it to cure this

condition.

 

CLOGGED ARTERIES? EAT AVOCADO!

Mono unsaturated fat in avocados lowers cholesterol.

 

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? EAT CELERY AND OLIVE OIL

Olive oil has been shown to lower blood pressure.
