Hi Todd

Spam? I'm not sure. I'm not getting anything outside the cha egroup postings

that seems suspicious, but what's with the ads at the bottom of all the

emails? Sorry if i am so new to that i'm not aware of where these

ads originate and why? Of course, i get them in other emails, too.

Good morning all,

Just joined this group and am looking

forward to learning and sharing.

Regarding spam, there's a neat free tool

called 'mailwasher' at http://www.mailwasher.net -

it lets you send 'bounce' messages to any spam

received. Ideally, it will convince the sender

your account is not active.

Enjoy,

Well i'm sorry I joined this group. I thought this was a group

involved in Chinese medicine, but it seems to be all about spam and

nothing else. Please take me off the list.

If you can take a few extra seconds to report them to spamcop.net,

they inturn will info the ISP. The usual action is that the ISP

will

immediately close the offender's account. Be sure to send the

header. If you know how to parse the header yourself you can

contact the ISP, too. I find Spamcop much faster.

Thanks. The amount of spam I have been getting has gone well beyond

intolerable to the point where by the time I got through going

through the spam and just deleting it, this left little energy or

time for researching TCM topics. Blocking wasn't much help until I

discovered the ability to block domains and not just individual

addresses. I'm still getting some spam, but it's down a lot from what

it was.

I definitely will be using spamcop.net for the few that get through.

Thanks,

Victoria

Hi Judy,

One of the problems with having your email listed anywhere on the net is

that someone, somewhere is going to highjack your email address and use

it as a " reply to " address to fool the uninitiated who recieve the spam.

I get error messages daily from those who've used my address(es) for spamming.

Just between you and I, the overall bulk of these error messages is not

that great, certainly not as much as the spam that my addresses

generate. So, I just add these bounce reports to my morning delete. ; )

Even when people take the spam with your name on it and report it to

spamcop, anti-spam programs are smart enough to recognize where the mail

really comes from. I have not once recieved a warning from my ISP or my

webserver company due to someone spamming with my address.

I don't like it, but I figure that at least, people are finding out

about my websites. ha ha.

The only way that I can think of to get on top of this problem is to

remove your email address from all articles that are accessable to the

public. I don't know how many spammers are getting addresses from the

site but if you need some help in getting your

ariticles removed from acupuncture.com, I can perhaps help you with

that. I'm no longer in the driver's seat over there and they can be a

little stubborn with making changes at the request of authors, but I

feel personally responsible for your content at acupuncture.com and I

know of ways to encourage them to remove your articles if necessary.

It's the first time it's ever happened to me. I let the first one go -

other than reporting it to hotmail and aol, but the second got me concerned.

This was a concern of mine. Also, that someone using my address for their

crass advertising and spamming might turn someone off to learning about TCM.

The spam seems to be targeting people with an interest in alternative

medicine - judging by the handles of the recepients.

>The only way that I can think of to get on top of this problem is to

I started Chinese Traditional Medicine and write articles because I know what it's like to

need help and not be aware that there is something that can help. So

removing my email address and articles are not an option. However, I am

always on the lookout for better security. For a while, I was asking

applicants to Chinese Traditional Medicine to tell me how or why they're interested in

TCM. This was a filter to keep out persons who come on lists just to gather

email addresses for spamming. When we moved and I was without a computer for

long periods of time, I stopped doing this as the people applying for

membership already had had to wait for sometime.

Your replying and letting me know you've been through it helps. Also, that

I'm not about to lose my internet connection because of a spammer. Thanks.

BTW, I now live in a state where spamming and identify theft are taken

seriously, and I have contacted the attorney general.

Not sure if they are still in business....but I used to

use Spamcop.net. A great service that would parse the

header for you and send a form letter to the ISP involved.

The reply would come back to me and it usually was to

inform me that the account involved had been closed.

Of course, they will merely open another account and

start all over!!! At least, they are foiled at one turn! Kit

IF you can get a copy of one of the pieces of spam,it is possible to

track down the offender's Internet Service Provider through the

Header in the email. Most ISPs aren't very tolerant of spammers, and

will try to assist you in any way possible.

Hope this helps,

Let me remind everyone that this group is not open to the public.

All people wishing to join the group have to first request then

submit an introductory message to myself, in which they state their

qualifications in TCM and their intend on joining the group. Only

after i have received this information are they allowed into the

group, pure and simply. Quite a large majority don't bother sending

the intro message to myself and therefore don't get in. So the

chances of a spammer gaining access and promoting their products is

extremely slim.

May i also remind people, that it is the job of myself and Marco to

check messages and spot spammers, flaming, swearing, etc. If people

feel another member is not abiding by the rules of the group then

they should inform either myself or Marco of the fact. This includes

people emailing others off list to complain that they didn't cut out

text when replying, (i.e. replying to a daily digest).

Many members, like myself, are new to technology, and with things

moving so fast, its difficult for many to keep up. This includes the

use of the internet and participating in discussions groups like

this. Let's all try and make allowances for others, especially since

Christmas is just around the corner.

I hope this sets the record straight and provides all with the

necessary guidelines to continue in discussions within this group.
