Guest guest
Bingeing Delays the Signal by Victoria There was a show recently on PBS entitled, "Dying To Be Thin". There were examples of different kinds of eating disorders and doctors doing one study were searching for answers on binge eating. They wanted to know if somehow people who binged on food did not know when to call it quits. Maybe they did not know when to stop eating food. They had subjects drink a large shake with radio-active particles in it that would show up in an X-ray. What they found out was when people eat normally, food enters into the small intestine and as soon as the food starts to go into the small intestine, the brain receives a chemical that signals us to stop eating. When people who binge eat were tested, the doctors found that the food that would normally go into the small intestine did not leave the stomach, but instead, stayed there for a while. Because the food did not go into the small intestine, the person eating does not get the signal to stop and continues to eat and eat. So binge eating does more than cause excessive weight gain. It really messes up the digestion and can keep you from knowing when to stop eating. If you have a problem with binge eating, do get some help with this eating disorder. It can be a vicious cycle that is harmful to your mind and your body. Check out http://www.something-fishy.org for more information on compulsive/binge eating. It is a great site that addresses all the eating disorders.
