Guest guest
The Three Gunas: Saatva, Raja and Tama. Ancient yogic wisdom tells us there are three inherent qualities or attributes to matter, that may apply to any context in our lives: Saatva refers to something that is pure, elevated, light, meditative and enlightened (Saatvic). Raja refers to activity, aggressivity, restlessness, heat and 'spice' such as in foods (Rajastic). Tama means inertia, dullness, laziness, heaviness, obscurity (Tamasic). Anything that elevates our consciouness and spirituality is said to be Saatvic, irritants and stimulants are Rajastic and anything that dulls our awareness or intoxicates our bodies is Tamasic. Examples or Saatvic activities or foods: yoga, eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Examples of things Rajastic: spices such as cloves and peppercorns, intense exercise, caffeine. Examples of things that are Tamasic: smoking, drinking alcohol, heavy foods such as meat. Applying these principles to our everyday life gives a clue on what feeds our soul, what excites and stimulates us, and what can bring our energy and well-being to a lower level.
