Hi Christina,

I don't know of any EO's. I can tell you that my mom and several of my friends have benefited from a lotion that has Emu oil and MSM in it.

are there any essential oils that give pain relief? I'm looking for something that I can mix with some oil or lotion and use on my arm or on my knees when they get swollen and sore from arthritis. My right arm (from the elbow down) will get sore from even the smallest amount of overuse (what most normal people would consider a normal amount of use) due to exentisive nerve damage and when I overdo things, the muscles will burn with pain. I've tried some of the over the counter pain relief creams but they either don't work or they contain drug ingredients that I am allergic to (aspirin). Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Try getting some arnica and doing an oil infusion or you can get some arnica oil from the health food store and that may help you. I used it before when I had carpel tunnel and it did give me some relief.

Hi Christina,

The following oils are very successful in treating

rheumatic pains and muscles aches:-

- Oil of winter green ***

- Rosemary

- Basil

- Camphor ***

- Black Pepper ***

- Lavender

- Thyme ***

- Marjoram ***

- Eucalyptus ***

You may add Menthol *** as well. You dilute one of the

above oils ( or a mixture of, oils marked with *** are

the most effective) quantity from 5-10 ml in any

carrier oil 90-95 ml (Olive, Sunflower, etc.) and use

as a massage. You may also enhance your formula by

adding Aloe Vera gel ( I used to cut the Aloe Vera

leave and extract the gel) and SMS or DMSO both are

used as skin penetration enhancer, but you need to

shake your formula before use as both of them are

water soluble. I tried this formula for my mother and

got a remarkable result.

Get well.

I used to make a spray for my Mom ( RA) when she was still here, it had

MSM, some witch hazel...pretty simple. Actually, she used it more like

a splash, dabbing and rubbing it into her knees and hands. She said it

gave her almost immediate relief, which may have all been in her head,

but hey, it worked : ) If you would like the recipe, let me know and

I'll dig it up.

There are many EOs that may bring relief - some like eucalyptus,

rosemary, mints...the menthol types.

There is a program you can download for free (I have always found it

safe to download):

www.aromapedia.com.

It has been around for years, and can give you some basic info on which

E)s for what, and how to use them.

I've been using a product called Biofreeze. It's menthol, it comes in a roll-on type of bottle (as well as a gel you rub on), and it has a vanishing scent, so you don't smell like a walking pharmacy. I swear by the stuff.

Here's their website: http://www.biofreeze.com/ I've ordered directly from the company in the past, but I've also been able to find a few chiropractors in my area who carry it. I have fibromyalgia and it helps soothe screaming nerves, as well as sore muscles from hiking or weight workouts.

Hi Christina!

I use an essential oil blend of Plai, Sweet Marjoram, Turmeric and

either Wintergreen or Peppermint. If I am REALLY hurting, I use a

bit of menthol crystals with it. I use the Active Comfort (with the

wintergreen) twice daily and if I have overdone it, I use the Muscle

Relief (with peppermint) - this one is especially good for muscle

type pains. My knees and back complain if I don't use it twice

daily. I put it in fractionated coconut oil because that absorbs

into the skin better and doesn't feel gunky like using lotion can

sometimes.

Hope this helps!

thank you to everyone for your ideas on natural pain relief from essential oils. I'll be going to the health food store later this week to pick some stuff up and I'll grab some of the eo's while I'm there. Cassandra, I really like your description of "screaming nerves". I've been trying to put a name to the pain to try and describe it better and screaming seems to fit the bill.

Nancy,

Where can one buy the EO's you mentioned? I would really like to get more EO's and less FO's, and Sweet Marjoram, and Turmeric, sound interesting. I've never heard of Plai, or Active Comfort, could you tell me what they are?

Thanks

Lorene

These are products I make. The Active Comfort and Muscle Relief are

available on my website, www.earthnotions.biz . If you are

interested in doing your own blends, I can give you prices on the

oils I mentioned - just contact me at earth_notions for

pricing. I love essential oils and have been working with them for

around 10 years now - can't imagine life without them, lol!

Plai is in the ginger family but is a cooling herb rather than a

warming one. Some studies have shown it can give pain relief for up

to 12 hours. The sweet marjoram is a good muscle relaxer and the

tumeric is a good anti-inflammatory, hence the combination.

Thanks!
