HEALING BENEFITS OF CHRYSANTHEMUM by Patricia Valle Chrysanthemum ( Chrysanthemum sinese and Chrysanthemum indictum) is from theAsteraceae (Compositae) family and is related to marigolds, zinnias, dahliasand sunflowers. Originally cultivated in China this remarkable flower is nowgrown all over the world. There are over 200 species in the genus. The name,Chrysanthemum is derived from the Greek, chyros, meaning "golden and anthos,meaning "flower". The flowers come in every color except blue, and aremainly used for ornamental purposes in the United States. They are, however, used as a food in salads, cooking, beverages, and can befound in many markets. The Chinese use chrysanthemum as a cooling beverage to help alleviateheadaches and fever, and also to remove toxins from the body. The flowersare also known to act as a blood purifier and for counteracting inflammationand relieving symptoms of vertigo (dizziness). Studies have shown thatchrysanthemum flowers can improve vision and are used for a wide range ofeye problems such as eye strain, night blindness, redness and eye soreness.Chrysanthemum also shows a potential for treating angina by dilatingcoronary arteries. It is also used as an anti-hypertensive (to lower highblood pressure). Another remarkable study shows that chrysanthemum possessesstrong activity against abnormal growths and is proving to be an antibioticagainst a wide range of pathogens. There are at least fifteen compoundsisolated from the edible flowers, all possessing potent inhibitory effectsagainst abnormal cell division. The chemical constituents of Chrysanthemuminclude, flavonoids, choline, vitamin B1, betaine and stachydrine. Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) is another species of the samefamily and is used in Chinese medicine to clear heat from fevers andheadaches. This variety is used primarily for calming and nourishing theliver. It's also used for blurry vision, excessive tearing or dizziness. Research has also shown that it is a valuable remedy for high blood pressure. Although chrysanthemum has many medicinal benefits, it also contain avariety of allergens which can cause contact dermatitis if one is allergicto members of the daisy family.
