Hi Katrina:

The alcohol is used to make a tincture of the dried herbs. You can leave it

out and substitute witch hazel extract (try drugstores for it).

I would start with 16 ounces of witch hazel to macerate the herbs in, strain

and add 16 oz distilled water (or for an extra strength deodorant, use all

witch hazel) and the essential oil. It will need to be shaken before use,

but it should make a good deodorant. Personally, I would cut the recipe in

half or even fourths...

Good luck,

Cat

Hi Katrina:

That's very considerate of you! The witch hazel extract does have a small

amount of alcohol added as a preservative, but I don't think it should cause

any problems.

Good luck to you and your dad!

I would not use witch hazel, you

need to get yourself some vegetable glycerin or even apple cider vinegar.

I use vegetable glycerin for my family that cannot use alcohol or my kids.

You can buy it here http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/supply/ingred.php

Vegetable Glycerine

This pure 100% USP grade vegetable glycerine (glycerin) is used in

cosmetics and body care products to assist in retaining moisture and is helpful

in pulling oxygen into the skin. Vegetable glycerine is a natural emollient

that adds a cooling effect on the skin and has become a predominant ingredient

in most skin care products and soaps. Vegetable glycerine is also the principal

medium for the manufacturing of non-alcohol based herbal extracts, which are

called glycerites. This makes for a sweet alcohol free extract that can be

easily administered to children, animals and those with alcohol sensitivities.

Kosher certified and suitable for food and cosmetic use.
