20 Amazing Ways to Use SALT

by Christina Maharajh

Yes indeed, salt can be used for so many more things than just seasoning the food you eat. In fact, it's been used for generations for many uses. Now, you can learn how to use that box of salt that sits in your pantry for so many other uses!

Although you may not realize it, simple table salt has a great number of uses other than simply seasoning your food.

1. PERKY LETTUCE. Add just a pinch of salt to a bowlful of water. Soak your lettuce or other greens in it. The salt will help crisp up that lettuce, and also make it look a little greener and more appetizing.

2. TEST EGGS. Let an egg soak in a cup of salted water. If it sinks, it's fresh; if it floats the egg is bad and should be thrown out.

3. BOILING EGGS. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt to your boiling water when boiling eggs. Even if the egg cracks, the egg will stay in its shell. (Adding a little bit of vinegar to the water will do the same thing.)

4. FLUFFIER EGGS. Just a pinch of salt added when you're whipping your eggs will make them fluffier.

5. TOOTHBRUSHES. Soak toothbrushes in a salt water mixture before using. They'll last longer.

6. TOOTH SCRUB. A combination of half baking soda and half salt is my favorite way to give my teeth a good scrub. Moisten the toothbrush, and dip into the salt/soda mixture. Use this to brush your teeth, then rinse your mouth well. I then follow with brushing my teeth with toothpaste. My teeth feel super clean when I'm done!

7. COFFEE POT CLEANER. Use a paste of salt and water to scrub out that grungy coffee pot and make it shine!

8. COPPER & BRASS CLEANER. Make a paste of 3/4 salt, 1/4 flour and just enough water to create a thick paste. Use this to clean brass and copper - rub it on, then polish it off. **Make sure to always test an inconspicuous area first, before doing the entire object.**

9. FLOWER LIFE LENGTHENER. Add a pinch of salt to your vase water before adding a bunch of cut flowers. They'll last longer.

10. CARPET STAINS. Pour salt directly onto wet stains, and allow the stain to soak up into the salt, then vacuum the salt away, with the stain!

11. CLEAN YOUR IRON. Rub a little salt on the bottom of your iron to clean off burnt areas.

12. PIANO CLEANER. Create a paste of salt and lemon juice and use to clean piano keys!

13. SORE THROAT. Gargle some warm salt water when you have a sore, scratchy throat. My Mom and Dad always suggested I do this, and it always helped.

14. WICKER FURNITURE. Rub down the furniture with salt water to prevent the wicker from yellowing over time.

15. CLEANING SPONGES. Soak your cleaning sponges in salt water. It extends their life.

16. POTS AND PANS. You can clean burned-on gunk and grime from the bottom of cooking pans by layering with a thick layer of salt, and just enough water to make a very thick paste. Allow to sit overnight. When you wake up, it should be much easier to remove the cooking stains.

17. DISCOLORED FRUIT. Sliced apples or any other fruits that brown after being sliced, will not brown when you place them in gently salted water after slicing. Great for keeping apples nice looking for desserts.

18. OVEN CLEANER. Sprinkle salt in your oven, and give it a good scrub. You'll be amazed by how clean it comes!

19. REFRIGERATOR DEODORIZER. An open container of 1/2 salt and 1/2 baking soda will absorb those awful fridge smells. You can also use baking soda alone.

20. BATHROOM MILDEW REMOVER. A thick paste of salt and lemon juice is an effective mildew remover! And much gentler than harsh commercial products.

Now, we'll all be off to Costco to buy our huge bulk boxes of salt! Hooray for salt, a product so effective, but so very often ignored.
