Guest guest
More on Lysine and Cold Sores Today I want to share two good letters that came in and add important insights to yesterday's health tip on cold sores and lysine: Chet: I've been using Lysine since I found I carried the herpes virus, and it's the best prevention/remedy going. I'd like to add something important, though: Whether the virus can act up or not depends on the RATIO of the amino acids lysine to arginine. Arginine triggers the little fellas into hyperactivity; thus, taking extra lysine changes this ratio and subdues them. It's obviously extremely important, then, to avoid foods that are high in arginine if you want to avoid an outbreak. The three main culprits (foods highest in arginine) are chocolate, nuts, and gelatin. (Yes, gelatin, so taking lysine in a gelatin capsule is a waste of money and effort! The production of such a conflict should not be allowed! Lysine comes in vegicaps, probably only at your health food store.) Brussels sprouts, corn, oats, and to a lesser extent wheat also are higher in arginine than lysine, but aren't nearly as herpes-happy as the three foods listed above. (Source: Food--Your Miracle Medicine by Jean Carper) Thanks for all the great info, Jess Moore, Albuquerque And one more letter with great advice: Hello Chet, I agree 100% with you about the lysine supplement! In my case, I find that it is the arginine in wheat that has not been thoroughly cooked that is the cold sore catalyst. Hot temperature does not necessarily indicate thoroughly cooked because there is a time factor that is also involved... i.e., my last episode was triggered by some really tasty lasagna. If you care to experiment, discontinue the daily supplement and have some undercooked pasta ... An inexpensive, effective home remedy is a 50/50 mixture of common rubbing alcohol (drying agent) and Campho- Phenique (camphor phenol).
