Guest guest
Wash Your Foods! Chet: Most people take the "ready to serve" label on foods as gospel, but, if you remember, your mom always told you to wash your hands. This is true of everything, and foods these days are touched by hands not your own. A lot of people would think to wash their salad, but their cantaloupe?, etc. For example, I take lettuce and dump it in a big bowl full of water. I swoosh it around and change the water completely. I then refill the bowl and add salt (I use nothing but natural sea salt - unprocessed). Add the lettuce back to the water and let it sit for a while, i.e. 15 to 20 minutes. Then, thoroughly rinse and spin dry. Put the lettuce in a produce bag or plastic bag, whatever you use, and it is ready for a quick salad. This goes for everything you eat in this day and age. I use dish soap to wash the outside of all my fruit before putting it away, which takes minutes. I never cut anything open until the outside has been thoroughly washed. When you cut a knife through the skin, the blade carries germs through to the inside of the fruit, which you then ingest. It only takes a few seconds to suds up a cantaloupe and rinse it. Then, no germs. I use this approach for all our foods. I even rinse my meats before I cook them. It is important since many workers are not clean and the pesticides used are dangerous. In California, about five years ago, they announced this problem, and it drew a lot of attention and investigation. It just takes minutes to wash your fruits and veggies. I use Shaklee dish soap, which is nontoxic, and I wash everything (I do not use soap on my meat), but I wash all my fruits and veggies. I eat mostly organic food, and even that needs extra washing. You can get a good organic dish soap at places like Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Earth Fare, Clark's, Trader Joe's, and other whole food health supermarkets. I use Shaklee because I sell Shaklee. Just beware.
