Guest guest
Merry Meet I was hoping someone might advise me as to how I can make some essential oil. I have alot of Jasmine that I would like to make oils with, however I have never made it before. I know a method sent through here was using Mineral Oil with flowers in it, shaking once a week & replacing flowers fortnightly......But I have read another method, but cant find the email now, whereby you skim off the oil from the top.....Could someone tell me the different methods & recommend any tips & pointers?? Thanks in advance Bright Blessings Althia AmberMyst
Guest guest
I honestly don't know the first thing about making essential oils, other than you need a press and it can be quite costly. You can however create infused oils by (as I was told) boiling the herb in a carrier oil, letting it steep and then filtering it through a coffee filter. Or the longer method of filling a jar with the intended herb, then filling the jar with a carrier oil, allowing it to sit for a couple of weeks, shaking it vigorously every day for a few minutes, then at the end of the two weeks replacing the herbs for another two weeks then straining. Jasmine specifically does not hold up well through the distillation process, therefore you won't see Jasmine essential oil, you will usually encounter Jasmine absolute, which is the plant essence extracted from solvents. It can take a ton of flowers to procure one pound of oil, so it is very costly and not something that people do on a small scale. If you want to capture the scent of Jasmine in an oil, you will be infusing the blooms. I wouldn't recommend mineral oil myself, as it is a by product of the petroleum industry, but using olive oil, Almond oil, Jojoba or fractionated coconut will work really nicely. You will want to get a canning jar that you can " burp " easily and stuff it full of blooms. Then pour your oil over it and shake it up every few hours for a couple of days. Replace the flowers after a couple of days, be sure to take the cap off prior to shaking, you need to let the moisture escape from the jar. Now this works much better if you leave your jar in the sun and let it gently heat. If you start to see sludge building up on the bottom you have to immediately pour the oil off, that is water in there and the whole thing will go rancid if left there. Discard the water (sludge) and keep infusing until you have the desired effect. I personally find it easier to tincture fresh flowers, because you don't have to deal with the rancidity issue. Buy a bottle of everclear at the liquer store and do the same thing as above, but replace the everclear with oil. I would change the blooms every day as the alcohol is the solvent and will extract the scent much more quickly. There is a lot of information on ticturing and infusing if you do a google search, but unfortunately, you won't be able to actually make an essential oil of jasmine yourself.
