Guest guest
Peanut Butter Cravings? by Victoria Do you ever get a craving for peanut butter, all of a sudden or do you crave it regularly? I get a hankering for peanut butter too. It is only a couple of times a year, and I find it so strange. I do like nuts, but peanuts are not a nut I care much for. As far as eating peanuts/peanut butter and health goes, peanuts can be harmful to health. Peanut oil, unlike other monounsaturated or polyunsaturated oils, caused severe atherosclerosis (clogged and damaged arteries) in monkeys and laboratory animals. It is not recommended by heart disease authorities, even though it does lower blood cholesterol. The worst thing about peanuts, as well as peanut butter, is they are often contaminated by a mold called aflatoxin, which is a carcinogen. In third world countries, aflatoxin is a widespread cause of liver cancer. Although the federal government regulates levels of aflatoxin contamination of foods, many experts consider the levels too high (Source, "The Food Pharmacy", Jean Carpenter). China has seen a greater incidence of liver cancer due to the same aflatoxin that grows on grains and other food products that begin to break down and develop molds. There are alternatives to peanut butter that are much healthier and very tasty. Almond butter or cashew nut butter (my favorite) are really good. Try those and see if they take care of the cravings when you get the "urge" again. But I believe it is a nutrient you are really craving when you need to have some peanut butter. My theory behind the peanut butter craving is that it is the CoQ10 that we crave when we feel the need for some peanuts. CoQ-10 is primarily found in foods like fish, meat, spinach and peanuts. For those that don't eat much meat, maybe that is why you are craving peanuts? Basically, without adequate coenzyme Q10, the heart cannot function properly. It simply starves for energy, and will eventually begin to fail. The symptoms of CoQ-10 nutrient depletion always appear first where the most action is--the heart. You may want to include a CoQ-10 supplement as part of your regimen.
