Summer Solstice for children - source unknown

Yesterday we had a wonderful Summer Solstice celebration for our children and some friends. We decided not to do it on the actual day of the solstice because some people had to work and it would be too hectic with rites at night.

Since it gets really hot here, we started the day about 10:30 in the morning with water fun. We had picked up some inflatable wading pools on sale half price. One has two pools with a "net" in between, an inflatable basketball hoop, and an inflatable t-ball. Since the kids ranged in ages from 10 months to 12 years, we had a low activity shallow pool and plenty of squirt guns too. We parents talked beforehand about closely supervising our kids so none of the little ones would drown.

Afterwards, we had egg salad sandwiches, fresh veggies with dip, and a mixture of sunflower seeds and sun dried fruit. The grownup drank sun tea with lemon.

Afterwards the kids colored pictures of the sun (I have links to them if anyone is interested. We talked a little about the sun, and the time of year. They played around for a while, and then we had a sun-shaped pinata. We let the little ones smack it first, and made sure they got their share of the goodies when one of the bigger kids finally broke it open. We also got plenty of pictures of each of the kids swinging at it.

Finally, we had ice cream and story time. We were going to read from "Circle Round," but instead we chose, "The Little Soul and the Sun" by Neale Donald Walsch. We adapted the story a little, exchanging references to "God" for "God and Goddess"

Everyone had a great time. It was probably one of the best seasonal children's parties I've had. The memories of laughter coming from the wading pools in back of my house are still with me.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?
