Say No To Wine For Health

by June Russell

I have a few comments to make about your recommendation

to drink moderate amounts of wine. There are facts that

are needed before individuals choose to drink wine for

one’s health, especially about the Mediterranean diet.

The "French Paradox" was debunked in a 21-nation World

Health Organization study in 1994 because it showed many

more French people died from heart disease than official statistics showed. (Washington Post Health, Oct. 8, 1994). Researchers also reported this in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 1999, and The Marin Institute states that the life expectancy of the French is about the same as Americans.

The life expectancy in France is only about a year more

than in America. Many French people fend off heart

disease without the use of wine perhaps because of

lifestyle. The French consume almost 5 servings of fruits

and vegetables daily - in American about 3, and they eat

more grains which are rich in antioxidants that help

fight off cancer and heart disease - and the French don’t

snack between meals. ("Eat, Drink, and Be Wary,"

Newsweek, March 1992) The French serving size is about

half the size of the portions in this country, their big

meal is in the middle of the day with a light dinner, and

they have half the rate of obesity we have.

France’s national medical research center now denies

there is a "French Paradox," and according to the

Lancet, there was bad data in ways of coding. Benefits of

red wine and health? The French are having second

thoughts. (Washington Post Health, June 2000. "Au Revoir, Paradox Francaise? Now that the rest of the world has accepted the story about red wine and health, the French are having second thoughts.")

Alcohol is the number one health problem in France, they

have banned alcohol ads on T.V. and movies, restricts

them on the radio until after 10 p.m., and forbids

alcohol industry sponsorship of sporting events.

Even small amounts of wine raises homocysteine and

triglyceride levels, and recent studies show that

dealcoholized wine confers longer lasting health benefits

than the wine with the alcohol. The AMA reported that the

heart muscle can be damaged by a poison like alcohol. An alcoholic drink - this includes wine - is a drug, a depressant, a carcinogen, and no less dangerous because it is legal. We are advised to avoid alcohol for almost every health problem. The amount you recommend is moderate drinking, and responsible reporting would also include the warnings of the dangers. The Dept. of Health and Human Services tells us that it only takes one drink to put individuals - and others at risk.
