Guest guest
Herbal Facial Steam Yield: 1 batch Fennel, nettle, rosemary and lime blossom improve circulation and encourage deep cleansing. Borage, houseleek, lady's mantle, marsh mallow (roots and leaves), parsley, salad burnet, sorrel, violet leaves and flowers, plus cornflowers, are soothing and softening for dry sensitive skin. Geranium (herb robert), horsetail, sage, yarrow, crushed lupin seeds and calendula petals help refine pores and remove dead skin cells which is especially beneficial to oily skins. Lemon verbena, dandelion, red clover (leaves and flowers), tansy (leaves and flowers) and elderflowers are used to revive mature or sallow skins. When giving yourself a facial steam, first tie back your hair, remove your makeup and clean your skin as normal. Put 2 handfuls of fresh leaves (or 3 tbsp. dried) in a basin and pour on 3 pints boiling water. Stir briefly with a wooden spoon. Then hold your face about a foot above the basin (18 inches if you have sensitive skin) and make a tent with a towel over your head to confine the steam. Close your eyes and maintain this for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and then cold water a few minutes later to gradually close the pores. Dab on an infusion of peppermint, sage or yarrow leaves or elderflower to tighten the pores. Avoid dramatic changes of temperature for an hour or two. Do not use a facial steam if you have thread veins, serious skin disorders, asthma or other breathing difficulties, or heart problems.
