Guest guest
Yes, Dog Food Recipes. Well, it seemed like something different! I love my dog, and the vet said Siberian Huskies have sensitive stomachs. When he was a puppy, he kept throwing up from canned dog food, which is primarily made of "animal by-products", which sounds gross, so I started making his meals myself, and was happy I had made that decision when I heard they think commercial pet food is behind the high cancer rate in dogs. The nice thing is, if you have human carnivores in the house, they'll all serve dual duty. I was going for both healthy and inexpensive. Portions here are based on my 75 pound dog eating twice a day most days... he's very self-regulating, and will only eat once if he's not hungry (smarter than me!)... adjust to your dog's needs! I put parsley in everything, because it keeps him from getting intestinal parasites... he's 5 1/2, and has had none at all so far! Turkey and Oat Meat Loaf Meat loaf: 1 lb. turkey 1/2 c. oatmeal, uncooked 1 slice whole grain bread made into crumbs 1 c. frozen peas or mixed veggies (optional) 1 t. dried parsley 1/2 t. dried oregano 1 sprinkle fennel seeds Topping: 2 T. catsup 1 T. apple cider vinegar sprinkle of chili powder or ginger Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Spray casserole with cooking spray. Mix all meat loaf ingredients together and form into loaf. Bake for one hour, then spread topping over the loaf, and return to oven for five minutes. Makes four doggie servings. On the rare occasion when I eat meat, about half a serving also makes a great meat loaf sandwich. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pork and Brown Rice Casserole 1 pkg pork ribs, with 4-5 ribs 1 cup brown rice 1/8 c. dried cranberries (optional) 1 t. dried parsley 1 t. dried rosemary 3 cups water Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Spray large casserole dish with cooking spray. Mix all but the pork together in the casserole, then lay ribs on the top. Bake 1 1/2 hours, or until pork is really tender. If the pork has bones, I set those aside for him to have outdoors. It's really less messy if you get the boneless type, but he loves getting the bones once in awhile. Serving size is 1 rib and then divide the rice up evenly, so you get 4-5 portions. He loves this one! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tuna Macaroni Casserole 2 cans water-packed tuna 1 cup of whole grain pasta, either macaroni or spirals, cooked 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 c. nonfat milk or Silk 1/4 c. parmesan cheese, or other cheese 1 t. parsley 1 t. marjoram Cook the macaroni and set aside to drain. In same pot, heat the soup and milk, then stir in all the ingredients, including the drained macaroni. Divide into four portions. You can also use canned salmon for variety. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I also bake or boil chicken thighs and legs for him, and he has those cut up and mixed in with leftover grains or broken up corn tortillas, always with a sprinkle of parsley. It sounds hard, but really, I only cook about twice a week, as I do a couple of different things at once, and keep them in individual dishes in the fridge. He likes tuna sandwiches too... doggy style with the whole grain bread broken up, and some mayo and parsley stirred in... they're great when I don't have something cooked. He doesn't like beef, probably because I never eat it. I do get some dried beef liver for snacks though, to be sure he's got a good iron source. When I have fish, he generally gets to share, since I can't ever eat it all soon enough anyway. He likes some of my vegetarian foods too, like bean and cheese burritos (just give him a few drops of Beano!). He's very happy and healthy with his homemade food!
