Does anyone know if Benzene is a part of the chemical make up of bisphenol

A?? If it is, that changes everything!! Thanks, Kraig

Kraig,

Yes, bisphenol A is a benzene-based synthetic compound!

BPA as bisphenol A is often called was first synthesized in 1905

by German chemist Thomas Zincke at the University of Marburg. Zincke

used phenol (also known as hydroxy benzene) and acetone to synthesize

BPA. So BPA has a big dose of benzene in every single molecule.

The " phenol " term in bisphenol A refers to a

" benzene " unit or aromatic ring while acetone is not a

benzene derivative. If BPA had a saturated carbon ring structure, it

would say cyclohexane and would not be a phenolic or aromatic

ring.

Bisphenol A is purely synthetic chemical and not a naturally

occurring plant compound since it has never been found in the plant

world and I would not expect it to be based on its structure and the

basic feedstocks used to synthesize it, benzene and acetone which do

not occur in plants except as part of other molecules. For example,

benzoic acid is a natural product found in green plants and it can be

synthetically produced as well. Upon breaking down in soil, benzoic

acid can give rise to benzene from soil microbial degradation or

potentially UV light photodegradation.

BPA has many health concerns listed at Our Stolen Future website

and I recommend that folks read about the hazards of exposure to

Bisphenol A:

http://www.ourstolenfuture.org/NewScience/oncompounds/bisphenola/bpauses.htm

For example, BPA is

associated with molecular and gross health effects ranging

from:

BPA scrambles the

chromosomes of grandchildren in mice ... New

BPA causes breast

cancer in rats ... New

BPA increases sensitivity to carcinogen causing breast cancer in rats

.... New

Low-level BPA tied to

prostate cancer ... New

Flaws and

misrepresentations in science used to by industry to assert bisphenol

A safety ... New

Industry mounts coalition to defeat California legislature on

bisphenol A

Low-level BPA causes insulin resistance in mice

BPA tied to recurrent miscarriage in people

Low level BPA adversely affects prostate development

Industry criticisms of BPA science flawed

Scientists call for new risk assessment of BPA and reveal industry

bias in research

BPA is as powerful as estradiol at initiating calcium influx into

cells
