Vegetables Much Better Than Drugs at Building Bone Density

The evidence continues to pour in that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is good for your health. In this case, researchers found that both young and old age groups had improvements in bone mineral status when they ate a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Specifically, boys and girls aged 16-18 years and women aged 60-83 years had significant positive associations between spine bone mineral content and fruit intake. In boys, the association was true for neck bone mineral content as well.

Among women aged 60-83 years, a significant positive association was also found between spine bone mineral content and fruit intake. The results found that if fruit intake doubled, it would result in a 5 percent increment in spine bone mineral content.

Previous studies have also found associations between fruit and vegetable intake and positive measures of bone health.

It is not yet known how fruits and vegetables may affect the bones, though some suggest it may be the alkalizing effect of fruit and vegetable consumption on acid-base balance. Other possible mechanisms include the dietary effects of vitamin K, phytoestrogens and other unidentified dietary components they contain.

This is a great article. I not only eat a ton of fruits and veggies,

I also take a supplement of red yeast rice. I was diagnosed with

osteopenia a couple years ago, even with my huge consumption of fruits

and veggies, so with this supplement I can be sure I'm adding new

bone. If you want to get some, make sure it is the correct strain - I

guess there are a few different kinds of red yeast rice, I think most

are for lowering cholesterol. But the one I use is certified by the

International Bone Laboratory that it actually does lay down new bone.

Hi Carol,

Where do you get your red yeast rice and who is the manufacturer?

Have you had your BD check recently to see if you are improving? I am very interested in this subject after shattering my hand and food and breaking my hip.

Thanks,

Lee

Hi Lee, in case you missed it, this is where I get the red yeast rice

from : http://tinyurl.com/gwlh No, I have not had a BD since starting

on this - it's been about a year since I started taking two a day, and

since bone regenerates itself so slowly, I will probably wait another

year before I have another BD. The research states that " dramatic

increase in bone mineral density would require many months of usage. "

And in case anyone is interested in the Internatinal Bone Laboratory,

(IBL), and who they are (this product was given the IBL certification

seal) - it consists of a group of scientists who are qualified to

verify the anabolic effects on bone of small molecule compounds. IBL

was organized in response to the demand from manufacturers and

marketers of bone-related health products who wanted to demonstrate

that their products are bone active. They conduct a calvarial (bone of

the skull) assay to determine bone activity of a given compound. Only

those compounds that are found to be bone active receive the IBL

certification seal.
