November 2, 2006

GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of the widely prescribed antidepressant Paxil, has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit for $63.8 million. The lawsuit accused the company of withholding damaging information about the drug's safety and effectiveness in children and adolescents.

Residents of the United States who purchased Paxil or Paxil CR will be eligible to receive full refunds if they have a proof of purchase. Depending on the number of claims and the amount of lawyer's fees, consumers may receive full or partial payments.

Illinois Circuit Court Judge Ralph J. Mendelsohn will hold a hearing in March to determine the appropriateness of the lawyer's fees, which could amount to as much as $16.6 million.
