Hypochlorhydria at the root of health issues

People with bowel issues that result in malabsorption, such as

candida, Crohn's disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and

plain old poor digestion, and about half the population over 65,

will have hypochlorhydria -- low stomach acidity (HCl), which is

also the primary cause of gastric reflux, AKA acid reflux or GERD

or GORD.

Given the prevalence of malabsorption due to the epidemic of

bowel disorders, and the fact that nearly all of us will hit at

least 65 years of age ;) this is a crucially important, often

overlooked, and usually incorrectly treated issue. In fact the

correct treatment is to NOT use antacids but the exact opposite

in the vast majority of cases, regardless of how " acidic " GERD

feels to the throat. People who treat GERD with antacids are

actually slowly killing themselves, often with the asistance of

thei doctor.

Histidine (an amino acid), zinc, and vitamin B1 are all necessary

for HCL production. Dietary deficiency or malabsorption of these

nutrients can result in hypochlorhydria. But, the absorption of

histidine and zinc are dependent upon the presence of adequate

levels of HCL; their absorption, and gastric reflux, are improved

with betaine HCl with meals.

There is about .7 of a gram of histidine in a 36-gram dose of

undenatured whey. The zinc should also absorb OK in the colon

where metals like calcium, magnesium and iron primarily absorb,

provided you're getting adequate inulin, which leads to better

acidity at the bowel lining due to bifidobacteria and

lactobacilli population.
