Just thinking about needles and drills can bring on severe anxiety in the most tranquil personality.Researchers at the MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA, Austria, investigate how the essential oils of orange and lavender affect anxiety, mood, alertness and calmness in dental patients.Two hundred patients were included in the study: half men, half women. As the patients waited for dental procedures, they were assigned to one of four groups: one group was stimulated with the ambient odor of ORANGE, a second group with LAVENDER, a third group with MUSIC, and the fourth group, the control group, received no odor or music.Not surprisingly, the researchers

reported: “Statistical analysis revealed that compared to control condition both ambient odors of orange and lavender REDUCED ANXIETY and IMPROVED MOOD in patients waiting for dental treatment.”The August 2005 study concluded: “These findings support the previous opinion that odors are capable of altering emotional stated and may indicate that the use of odors is helpful in reducing anxiety in dental patients.” Just imagine the results if the researchers had used Peace &
