Lipitor class action questions drug's benefits

October 9, 2005

A class action lawsuit was filed last month against Lipitor cholesterol-lowering

drug's manufacturer Pfizer Inc. Seeking to reimburse consumers and health

insurers for the costs of the medication, the suit questions whether Pfizer had

proof while aggressively promoting the drug that statins prevent heart attacks

in women and seniors who are not already suffering from heart disease or

diabetes.

The lawsuit claims 74 percent of patients taking the $10 billion a year drug do

not need it. While the lawsuit does not dispute Lipitor reduces LDL cholesterol

in women, the lawsuit says that the ultimate goal of statin therapy is to

prevent heart attacks, strokes and deaths, which clinical trials have not proven

the drug is able to do for women and seniors who are without heart disease or

diabetes.

According to the suit, a large clinical trial including 2,200 women showed that

the women who took Lipitor developed 10 percent more heart attacks and heart

disease deaths than women who took the placebo pill. Another trial including

5,804 patients aged 70 to 82 who took statins found no reduced risk of heart

disease for those who did not already have a heart condition while they

increased risk of cancer.

A Pfizer spokeswoman declined to comment on the lawsuit.
