Have you read the warning/caution labels on your Shampoo,

Cream Rinse, Body Lotion, Body Shampoo, Shower Gel, Shaving Cream, Deodorant,

Toothpaste and Mouthwash? I didn't think so. Perhaps you should: read on!

 

The hair and scalp are two parts of the body where we are extremely vulnerable

to illnesses brought on by our destructive contemporary lifestyles. The scalp

in particular is a living, breathing skin, and its work should be enhanced by

gentle, cleansing products, not impaired by chemical detergents. Unfortunately,

most commercial shampoos contain the toxins Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Sodium

Laureth Sulfate. These chemical agents are responsible for the foam and lather

that we love to see, however, they can be very harmful when they are absorbed

into the circulatory system. Our bodies need detergent-free products to create

healthier internal and external environments and to function properly.

 

The following substances are found in 90% of all shampoos: SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE (Sodium

Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) & PROPYLENE GLYCOL.

These have been identified as being very dangerous and current thinking is to

avoid contact with either. Natural Health Food stores have gentler

alternatives to these toxic substances.

SODIUM LAUREL

SULFATE IS IN THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD USED AS:

1. Garage floor cleaner

2. Engine degreaser

3. Car wash soaps

SLS is of great concern to many scientists who have found

that approximately 90% of commercial shampoos, even " no more tears "

baby shampoo, most bubble bath formulas and toothpaste contain SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE!

A study done at the Medical

College of Georgia has shown that SODIUM

LAUREL SULFATE:

· Could retard healing and keeps children's eyes from

developing properly. Children under 6 are especially vulnerable to improper eye

development (Summary of Report of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc.,

conference)

· Could cause cataracts in adults and delays the healing of wounds in the

surface of the cornea

· Builds up in the heart, liver, lungs and brain and can cause major problems

in these areas

· Causes skin to flake and to separate and causes substantial roughness on the

skin

· Causes dysfunction of the biological systems of the skin

· Is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and

impairs its ability to grow hair When that happens, baldness comes to both men

& women

MSDS on SLS warns to avoid skin contact as it is systemic and

can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. Studies indicate that SLS is

systemic, can penetrate and be retained in the eye, brain, heart, liver etc.,

with potentially harmful long-term effects. It could retard healing, cause

cataracts in adults and can keep children's eyes from developing properly.

Other research has shown that SLS and SLES may cause

potentially carcinogenic nitrates and dioxins to form in shampoos and cleanser

by reacting with commonly used ingredients found in many products. Large

amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing. SLES

is the alcohol form (ETHOXYLATED) of SLS. It is slightly less irritating but

may cause more drying. Both SLS and SLES can enter the blood stream. They are

used in personal-care products because they are cheap. A small amount generates

a large amount of foam and when salt is added it thickens to give the illusion

of being thick and concentrated.

 

 

 

PROPYLENE GLYCOL IS USED IN THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD FOR:

Industrial Anti-Freeze, Resin, Varnish, Brake/Hydraulic

fluid, Airplane Deicer, Paint & Coatings, Floor wax, Liquid Laundry

detergents, Pet Food, & Tobacco.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL:

· Has adverse health effects and has been found to cause

contact dermatitis, kidney damage and liver abnormalities

· Inhibits skin cell growth in human tests

· Damages cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin and surface damage to the

Excerpts from an interview with Tom Mower by Trudy Novack on

CJAD Radio in Ottawa, Canada on May 26, 1993.

Tom Mower is a Research Scientist and President of Neways

International, a company he founded on the principal of applying the latest

the safest and most effective personal care products in the world. Tom has

Interviewer: You have mentioned Sodium Laurel (or Laureth/TEA) Sulfate, or SLS. Can

you mention the types of products we find this in and why it is so dangerous?

Tom: Yes. You find SLS in most hair shampoos, bubble baths,

bath and shower gels and in toothpastes (even the ones in the “health

food stores”). It can

also be in facial cleansers and the like. It is the ingredient that makes all

the bubbles and foam and is what makes them thick. It is exactly the same ingredient that is used to clean

garage floors and to degrease engines. It’s also in car wash soap because

it attacks greasy surfaces and really cleans by corrosion. It is used all over

the world. Sodium Laurel Sulfate is the universal standard used to irritate

skin in clinical testing so medical researchers can test ingredients to see how fast the skin heals. Because it

corrodes the lipid and/or grease structures, it does the same to your skin.

When it gets down into the hair follicle, it literally corrodes the hair follicle. It has great effect, but who wants

it?

Because of corrosion, your skin can’t contain the

moisture so it starts drying out fast. So how does the cosmetic industry

respond? “What you should

do is put something on the skin like Propylene Glycol which is a

humectant.” Well, they call it a humectant but in reality Propylene

Glycol, which is in almost every

moisturizer (I’ve never seen one that didn’t have it), is in

industrial anti-freeze and brake fluid just like in your car. It mixes well

with water and when you put it on your skin, it gives you that glide and a

smooth greasy feeling. Propylene Glycol holds moisture by “filming” your skin, thus preventing it

from breathing and literally starving the skin of oxygen. Skin runs on water

not anti-freeze! As a result, you are putting a potentially very harmful

ingredient on your skin. The Material Safety Data Sheet on Propylene Glycol

says: “Avoid skin

contact” because it is a major skin irritant and can cause liver

abnormalities and kidney damage. In other words, it is systemic. Put it on

your skin and it goes right into your body

and damages your kidney and your liver.

Interviewer: Now, what about the shampoos that claim to give

your hair body and make it thicker?

Tom: They coat your hair with animal fat. You are just

greasing the hair up. The cosmetic manufacturers react animal fat, put it in

the shampoos and guess

what, you’ve gotten this greasy animal fat all over your hair, getting it

down in and plugging the hair follicles. On your scalp, bacteria can feed on it. It’s a poor excuse for taking

care of hair. Why are they doing this? Because your hair has been eaten by the

protein-stripping SLS in your shampoo and grown very dry and very brittle.

For the cosmetic firms the answer is

“grease it up.”

Interviewer: I guess that because most people don’t

have a reaction right away, they are saying: “How do you know; what proof

do you have that this is

really damaging me?” Are you saying that the proof is just like

cigarettes? It may not be “proven” but we have to assume that

since these things cause cancer in

laboratory animals that we may be paying for the damage 5 or 10 years down the

road?

Tom: Very definitely. We know that nitrates are serious

carcinogens. So are dioxins, and both occur in shampoos. Neways does no animal

testing. But I study medical test results

which show that SLS gets right into the blood system of the test animals and

then travels to affect the eyes.

This result was observed in young, growing animals and SLS kept their eyes from

developing properly. SLS is in the very same shampoo that you are putting on your children’s hair! It

is illogical to think that it wouldn’t affect humans. There are some

things that would affect animals and

not affect humans, but this is basic science.

Interviewer: That’s interesting, because probably with

children, whose immune systems are not fully developed, it’s having a

greater effect on them. And

we should be thinking about our children first and foremost when we are

considering shampoos and cosmetics to use on them.

Tom: We definitely should. There was a study in Georgia at

The Institute of Blindness that showed that SLS has the potential to keep

children’s eyes from

developing properly. That’s a pretty serious statement! If science has

found what causes these problems, are there not solutions out there? And the

answer is, “Fortunately, there are!” Safe ones are available that have a tremendously positive effect on

wrinkling, cellulite, aged skin, thin hair, and many other problems that we

develop as we mature. There are

solutions, but those provided by the big cosmetic manufacturers are not the

answer. The marketplace is filled with “hype.” Normally the labels and bottle caps cost more than the

ingredients in the products.
