American death rate drops: Thanks to alternative therapies?

The 2 percent decrease, reported by the National Center for Health Statistics, may be a surprise, because the American population is growing, aging and becoming fatter. Some experts said they suspected that the numbers might not hold up when a final report is

released this year. Officials at the center said the statistics, based on a review of 90 percent of death records in all 50 states, were consistent and solid enough to report. The center said decreases in the death rates for heart disease, cancer and stroke accounted for most of the decline. "We were surprised by the sharpness of the decrease," said Arialdi Minino, the lead author of the report and a statistician. "It's kind of historical."
