Refined white sugar, corn syrup, fructose...many other names they call is stripped from its nutrients to begin with! Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of one 12-ounce can of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by forty percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five to six hours. You get drastic blood sugar level swings which can make you suddenly tired, feel like riding a roller coaster but not sure why. (Sugar Blues) The damage sugar does is slow and insidious. It takes years before it ruins your pancreas, your adrenal glands, throws your whole endocrine system out of kilter and produces a huge list of damage. When we talk about sugar, we are including bad nutrition as a whole, since anyone who indulges in sugar has bad dietary habits per se. 1. Sugar is by far the leading cause of dental deterioration - cavities in teeth, bleeding gums, failure of bone structure, and loss of teeth. 2. Sugar is the main cause of diabetes, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. 3. It is either a significant or contributory cause of heart disease, arteriosclerosis, mental illness, depression, senility, hypertension, cancer. 4. It has an extremely harmful effect in unbalancing the endocrine system and injuring its component glands such as the adrenal glands, pancreas and liver, causing the blood sugar level to fluctuate widely. It has a number of other extremely damaging effects on the human body. Some of the other effects of sugar on the body are: *Increases overgrowth of candida yeast organism *Increases chronic fatigue *Can trigger binge eating in those with bulima *Increases PMS symptoms *Increases hyperactivity in about 50% of children *Increases tooth decay *Increases anxiety and irritability *Can increase or intensify symptoms of anxiety and panic in susceptible women *Can make it difficult to lose weight because of constantly high insulin levels, which causes the body to store excess carbs as fat. Guest guest
think of enzymes as your body's information highway, think of sugar as grid lock. it makes it so your body cannot communicate correctly with other parts of it. so some organs over produce their chemical while others under produce. that's how it gets out of sync with each other. melissa.brian [melissa.brian] Monday, March 01, 2004 3:57 PMherbal remedies Subject: Herbal Remedies - Why is sugar so bad for you? Guest guest
I love that explanation Lauren! I also highly recommend just reading the book "Sugar Blues". I read it over the holidays (great time to read about not eating sugar, huh! It is an amazing book! It goes into the whole sugar history which was fascinating (and more relevant that I ever expected!) and much more. Whenever I think about how nice it would be to taste something sugary sweet, I remember the story the author tells about how you can survive easily with just water for quite a while (well, if forced , but if you throw sugar into the mix, you'll come out in hideous shape! Was a story about shipwrecked sailors that I can't remember the details on, but just the fact that sugar is not something the body survives on - it tears it apart.
