Guest guest
In my opinion she should not be in school at all. Look in the files under Total Tonic and mix some up ASAP. The pred will suppress her immune system so it cannot fight back. Echinacea and astragalus would be much better for her, as they will help her body to kick some Mono booty like it is meant to. Ply her with squeezed or certified organic juices. If she is having trouble swallowing due to sore throat, have her gargle with hot as she can stand it water and sea salt. No stress and complete rest for her. I know she will not like this, but the harder she pushes her body through cheerleading practice and other activities, the less energy it will have to fight. Janet - kimmykjl2003 herbal remedies Friday, February 13, 2004 5:18 PM Herbal Remedies - Herbal treatment for mono? Hi everyone! This is my first posting - I am a 31 year old mom of two from Ohio, married for 11.5 years. My daughter was finally diagnosed today (after 4 trips to doctor ad bloodwork) with mononucleosis. The test shows that she is only in the beginning stages of mono although she has already had the swollen "bullfrog" neck and her spleen is swollen. I am told she can attend school but is to do no gym, no physical activity for fear of spleenic rupture. She can't do her competitive cheerleading and indoor soccer either. Our only option is to wait this out because it is a viral infection and antibiotics do not work. 4-6 weeks at the very least. She is taking prednisone for the swelling, but it hasn't worked so far...I am worried about her blood counts. My husband has a friend that was treated by an herbalist for mono with swollen spleen and was better in 2 days...is this possible? We are going to consult with him, but I'll admit, I am new to "alternative medicine" and I am a bit nervous, especially because she is so young. Any thoughts or advice? Guest guest
he pred will suppress her immune system so it cannot fight back. YUP YUP YUP!!!! I agree..that friggin' pred is bad news. Not only suppress the immune system, it also raises the blood sugar, and that is a whole new set of problems. I am all for the sea salt. As for her attending school....isn't mono highly contagious? I was told, though it was years ago, that such a condition warrants home study for the duration of the illness. But like I said, times have changed...no telling WHAT the norm is these days....good luck, Janet said exactly what I was thinking....In Health... I kept her home this whole week even though the doc said she could go...with her spleen puffed out I was afraid someone might bump her or she would fall on the stairs. She has been out of cheerleading and soccer for about two weeks. Our plan was to finish the prednisone (3 days) then maybe begin an herbal treatment. I don't know enough about herbs to know if they will interact with a conventional medication. I will definitely look into the things you suggested. Thanks! xxxkimxxxDID I MISS SOMETHING??? WHY IS SHE TAKING PREDNISONE FOR MONO??? Since when did they start this? Here is some info you should know about it; What is prednisone? • Prednisone is in a class of drugs called steroids. Prednisone reduces swelling and decreases the body's ability to fight infections. • Prednisone is used to treat many different conditions. It is used to treat endocrine (hormonal) disorders when the body does not produce enough of its own steroids. It is also used to treat many disorders such as arthritis, lupus, severe psoriasis, severe asthma, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. • Prednisone may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Who should not take prednisone? • Do not take prednisone if you have a serious bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. Prednisone weakens the body's immune response and thus its ability to fight infection. • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have · kidney disease, · liver disease, · high blood pressure or heart disease, · ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, or stomach ulcers, · hypothyroidism, · a psychiatric condition, · osteoporosis, · myasthenia gravis, · diabetes mellitus, or · any other medical conditions. What are the possible side effects of prednisone? • If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking prednisone and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately: · an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); · increased blood pressure (severe headache or blurred vision); or · sudden weight gain (more than 5 pounds in a day or two). • Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take prednisone and talk to your doctor if you experience · insomnia; · nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset; · fatigue or dizziness; · muscle weakness or joint pain; · problems with diabetes control; or · increased hunger or thirst. • Other side effects that occur only rarely, usually with high doses of prednisone, include · acne, · increased hair growth, · thinning of the skin, · cataracts, · glaucoma, · osteoporosis, · roundness of the face, and · changes in behavior. • Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. What other drugs will affect prednisone? • Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications, including herbal products, during treatment with prednisone without first talking to your doctor. Many other medicines can interact with prednisone resulting in side effects or altered effectiveness of the medications.
