The Senate Public Affairs Committee met today and heard the bill to require a study of creating a licensing Board for Naturopathic Physicians. Unfortunately, the Memorial was tabled. It is not dead and can be brought off the table. We expected Senator Komadina (MD) to be opposed and probably Senator Boitano. What we didn't expect was Senator Mary Kay Papen and Senator Mary Jane Garcia to vote against the Memorial. The vote on a "do pass" motion was: In Favor: Senator Feldman, Chairman Senator John Pinto Senator Michael Sanchez Against: Senator Komadina Senator Garcia Senator Boitano Senator Papen A motion was made to table the bill and it passed which is good because the bill is still alive. It can be brought off the table but two votes must be changed. Calls need to be made to members of this committee to ask their support for SJM 3. The best opportunity to get changed votes are Senator Garcia and Senator Papen, both from the Las Cruces area. Please get NP's in the Las Cruces area to contact both Senators Garcia and Papen and ask them to support the bill and help get it off the table and moved on. Stress: 1. the bill does not establish licensing, it creates a study to evaluate the need for licensing. The study results will become a recommendation to the Legislature next year. 2. The study would allow all parties the opportunity to provide input into the need (or lack of need) for regulation and licensing of Naturopathic Physicians. 3. You have been in practice for ____ years and support the need for a study as provided in SJM 3. Get everyone in the membership to call members of the Senate Public Affairs Committee and make the points above. Don't get into the "grandfather" discussion since that will be part of the study. The lobbyist for the group in opposition claimed 200 members. How many Naturopathic Physicians would be in support?
